LAT Archive: American legend Bob Bondurant
Le Mans, F1, Sebring, Spa, Targa Florio... and now honoured with Daytona Coupe and Cobra continuations. We reflect on Bob Bondurant's remarkable career
Having been inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America back in 2003, Bob Bondurant's legacy was never in question.
But that hasn't stopped Shelby honouring his success with the announcement of continuation AC Cobras and Daytona Coupes – and this year his famous Bondurant Racing School celebrates its 50th anniversary too.
Recruited by Carroll Shelby in 1963, where he won all three of his races with the team at the end of the season, he played a significant role in the establishing the team as world beaters.
Bondurant's racing CV reads more like a fantasy bucket list for motorsport lovers. Winning Le Mans, racing Formula 1, competing in the Targa Florio, Sebring 12 Hours and Spa 500kms and all during the evocative 1960s.

1964 Targa Florio – Little Madonie Circuit, Sicily, Italy. 26 April. Phil Hill and Bob Bondurant share a Shelby Cobra, but retire during the event.
1964 Le Mans 24 Hours – Le Mans, France. 20-21 June 1964. Bob Bondurant and Dan Gurney share their AC Cobra Daytona – with redesigned bodywork to increase the car's top speed down the Mulsanne Straight – to fourth position, winning their class overall.
1966 Ilford Films 500 – Brands Hatch, England. 8 May 1966. Bob Bondurant and David Piper share their Shelby American Cobra 427 to the race win. Seen here on the rise out of Paddock Hill Bend.
1966 Sebring 12 Hours – Sebring, Florida, USA. 26 March 1966. Bob Bondurant and Mike Parkes share a Ferrari 330P3. Before retiring, it is seen here trailing Dick Thompson/Dick Guldstrand's Chevrolet Corvette and Masten Gregory/Augie Pabst's Ford GT40.
1966 Monaco Grand Prix – Monte Carlo, Monaco. 22 May 1966. Bob Bondurant in his BRM P261 leads the BRM P261 of Graham Hill. Eventually they swap positions and Hill pips Bondurant to third.
1966 Mexican Grand Prix – Mexico City, Mexico. 23 October 1966. Bob Bondurant in an Eagle AAR102-Weslake leads Pedro Rodriguez in his Lotus 33-Climax. Both would eventually retire.
