Classifieds Hero: Pontiac Trans Am ‘Bandit’
How much for a Bandit special edition Trans Am? This one's for sale in the AutoClassics classifieds, so you can play Burt Reynolds every day
America is famous for three things: freedom, food and the car chase movie. One particular film has created a franchise and cult movement that practically defined 1970s middle-class ephemera. It starred Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason and Sally Field – but forget about them; really, it’s all about the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
Sales doubled in the two years after Smokey and the Bandit debuted, much to the delight of General Motors. Reynolds was gifted one every year by Alex Mair, President of Pontiac, with popularity strong enough to warrant the 2007 ‘Bandit Run’, celebrating the film’s 30th anniversary. A group of Trans Am owners now partake in an annual road trip from Texarkana to Jonesboro, Georgia, recreating the route driven by the characters in the movie.
Naturally, with Smokey and the Bandit proving so popular it was only a matter of time before the ‘Bandit’ special edition started to roll out of the factory gates for the 1978 model year.
These special edition ‘Bandit’ Pontiac Firebird Trans Am variants rarely come up for sale, but AutoClassics currently have one residing in the classifieds.
From the Classifieds
This is a genuine Y-82 special ‘Bandit’ edition, documented by Pontiac’s historical service paperwork. The 400ci motor has been bored out to 468, offering in excess of 500bhp.
The underside is said to be completely rust-free with floors and sills still primed from the factory, mated to clean and straight bodywork panels. Paintwork is in top form with only minor imperfections, the Firebird emblem on the bonnet having been professionally repainted. The four-speed gearbox has been rebuilt, with a new fuel tank, heater core, steering box, electric choke and fresh tyres. The only thing to note is that the air-conditioning has been removed by the previous owner, but the motor is included in the sale.
One of the most recognisable cars in history, previous examples have sold for as much as $450,000. With all this power on tap, smokeys certainly won’t be able to catch ya!
