Classified Heroes: 1991 Peugeot 205 GTI with just 16k miles
This low mileage pocket rocket from the AutoClassics classifieds might just be THE Peugeot 205 GTI to own.
The Peugeot 205 GTI is not just a high watermark for fast hatchbacks of its era, it’s the hot hatch by which many are still judged today. Launched in 1984, the 205 GTI kept the recipe simple with compact proportions and performance that put the original Golf GTI in the shade. The updated 1.6-litre cars did 0-60mph in 8.7 seconds and would go on to a top speed of 122mph — heady stuff for a hatchback in the 80s.
The key to the 205 GTI’s popularity wasn't just its on-paper performance, but also how agile it proved on challenging country roads. Weighing just 850kg, the plucky Peugeot keenly changed direction and was known for its grin inducing lift-off oversteer. The motoring press loved the 205 GTI’s direct handling, enthusiasts for its performance, and onlookers for the stories they’d heard down the pub.
A 1.9-litre engine with 126bhp was made available and gave the 205 more straight-line performance. However, it is still up for debate as to which engine provided the best overall package.
Delve into the AutoClassics classifieds and you’ll find some excellent examples of the iconic GTI, but there is currently one that stands head and shoulders above the rest. Classic Heroes have a 16,720 mile car listed and it is a peach! Not only are the miles low, but the car itself is in near showroom condition. The paint is totally original, its scarlet red carpets are still vibrant, and the seats look barely sat in. This 205 GTI is currently undergoing a series of checks to replace perishable items such as brake discs, cam belt, hoses, suspension bushings, and a water pump to make sure it is in prime working order for the new owner.
The story goes that the 205 belonged to an elderly lady who bought the car new and cherished it. Garaged almost every day of its life and only serviced by the dealership the car was bought from, this GTI only parted company with its owner when she decided to hang up her driving gloves.
Peugeot 205 GTI prices have been increasing rapidly over the past few years with respectable high mileage cars starting at around £5000. This one is advertised at £43,000 but it might just be the most pristine 205 GTI out there.

The King of the hot hatches. Volkswagen may have started the GTI craze in 1976, but many still consider the Peugeot 205 GTI as the greatest of them all. The 205 was launched in 1983, a brilliant rival to its contemporaries with its ‘wheel at each corner’ design and flyweight mass. No wonder it won What Cars ‘Car of the Year’ in 1984 and was declared ‘Car of the Decade’ by CAR Magazine
