Classics for sale: Lotus Cortina Mk1
One of the must-have cars for racing at Goodwood is in our classifieds. Buy it now!
Some images define an era. In motorsport this is all the more true, and the sight of Jim Clark threading a Ford Lotus Cortina around a corner full throttle with the inside-front wheel in the air takes many viewers to an exact time and place.
The historic racing pedigree of the Cortina means it’s almost a car of two eras, as it is still achieving considerable success and attention in the 21st century. Two chassis’ in particular have been the pacesetters, and one is up for sale through AutoClassics.

Chassis number BA74EP59133 was produced by Ford at its Dagenham plant in April 1965. As one of the first aeroflow cars, it was built with the A-frame rear suspension. Six years later, the car was taken to a garage in Newmarket, Suffolk for service work.
The work was done, but the car didn’t leave the premises – and the sale of the garage in the 1990s meant the new owner inherited the vehicle. The Cortina was sold on to former rally driver Andy Wolfe, who restored it to FIA Appendix K specification (making it eligible for Historic competition) to race in the Under 2.0-litre Touring Car (U2TC) series for pre-1966 cars.
The car’s original shell was restored rather than replaced, with a full roll cage added and panel work attended to where required. A stainless-steel exhaust system and a flush-fit fuel tank, to lower the car’s weight, also enhanced performance.
Historic racing regulars Leo Voyazides and Simon Hadfield’s similar Lotus Cortina has been the car to beat, which Wolfe and Rob Hall did on numerous occasions before selling their car in 2011. The Lotus Cortina has continued to race in U2TC, appearing on the podium multiple times and taking a pole position.
Maintenance has been undertaken by Brands Hatch Morgans dealership, with the engine looked over by Ian Claridge of Anglian Racing Engines. The car’s most recent race appearance, incorporating the only mileage it has done on its Lotus twin-cam engine, was at March’s 76th Goodwood Members’ Meeting in the hands of Ben Mitchell, where it qualified eighth and finished seventh.
The sale includes a 2015 FIA Historic Technical Passport and spares package. The safety equipment is valid for use, with seatbelts expiring in 2020, the seat valid until 2022 and fire extinguisher valid until 2020. As well as U2TC, the original Cortina is also eligible to compete in the prestigious Masters Pre-’66 Touring Cars and HSCC Touring Cars championships.
