Classics for sale: Britt Ekland’s 1991 Mini Cooper

Car the actress bought new is now for sale through AutoClassics – and it’s a beauty. Celebrity provenance, no advisories on the MoT… it’s a modern miracle!

The Mini Cooper we have here is a truly insane prospect – and not only because it passed a recent MoT test with no advisories. Hush! We are entitled to say that because of how the AutoClassics Mini Mayfair behaves

Rather, this is the very Mini ordered by Britt Ekland on November 29, 1991 from HL Austin & Sons. The original V5 even boasts the actress’s previous address on Billing Street, Chelsea, while the notification of sale transfer slip still bears her signature.

More great Minis!

Britt owned the Cooper for five years, and she never really wanted to part with it. During a tabloid-documented divorce from then-husband Slim Jim Phantom, the drummer from rockabilly band The Stray Cats, Ekland was forced to auction off everything she owned. However, the Mini escaped auction humiliation and was purchased by the London Mini Centre.

The showroom on Lower Richmond Road, Putney, found the Mini a new home with a second owner, who kept the vehicle for 11 years before selling it on. That subsequent owner enjoyed the car for a further eight years. The celebrity Mini was then sold through an Historics classic car auction in 2017 for £7280 – where the lead images in this article come from. You can read more about its auction here. Don’t panic, though! We have photographic evidence of its current condition below.

For a Mini Cooper of such age, the car has clearly enjoyed extraordinary care and treatment. All three owners apparently cherished the vehicle, with no rust to be found and healthy mechanicals all round. We very much doubt the drivetrain has ever been driven in anger; even during Britt’s traumatic divorce.

The odometer trumpets a genuine readout of only 49,867 miles, backed up with lashings of MoT certificates and a wad of service history.

Meanwhile, the car’s specification is standard for a Cooper of this age, including half-leather seats, alloy wheels, a racing steering wheel, three-clock dashboard, original radio-cassette player and red carpets. Its latest blemish-free MoT runs until July 2019.

Swedish icon Ekland has long been associated with the humble British people’s car, as her then-husband Peter Sellers gave her a Mini as a birthday gift during the 1960s. Sadly, that original example was stolen and never recovered. Surely that makes this one all the more valuable?

She’s clearly smitten with the humble machine, and we are positive that knowing her old 1991 Mini Cooper is still in rude health would bring a smile to her face.

Not as big a smile as yours, however, should you purchase it. Get a closer look with the AutoClassics classifieds here.
