Run the mechanicals without due care and Germany’s steadfast engineering will plot against you, your friends and your family akin to automotive Patrick Bateman. Before it circles in for the kill, you’ll be subjected to hefty garage bills, senseless amounts of expenditure for replacement parts and an outright domino effect destined to plant you in an early grave.
For these reasons alone, suggesting that you purchase this dishevelled 33-year-old Porsche 928 S3 5.0-litre V8 would be irresponsible – especially when it’s been sat outside for nearly a decade.
However, while nine years in the wilderness would commonly find a tree growing through the floorpan, this 928 has been residing in California; an atmosphere that seems to slow the inevitable ageing process. See Jackie Stallone for further details.
As such, the 1985 Porsche is remarkably solid. While the underside is far from perfect, there is an outright lack of corrosion to be found. Wheel arches are rust free and sills have escaped the tin worm courtesy of California’s dry climate. Even the alloy wheels are in fine fettle. It almost seems too good to be true.
Harsh Western rays have poleaxed the paintwork slightly, but delve within the cabin and you’ve got a legitimate time warp. The leather seats boast a remarkable condition, as do the carpets, but there is one casualty of time. The unforgiving heat of three decades under the Californian sun remains imprinted on the dashboard, with crack lines dominating an otherwise immaculate interior.
Don’t let some age-related stress marks put you off, however. Make no bones about it, this is a restoration project and replacing the dash will prove to be only one of several jobs needing undertaken. If you want this Porsche V8 back on the road then you’re going to have to strip it, rebuild it and tend to its every whim – especially when it comes to the electronics.
The end result should prove totally worth it. These Porsche 928 S3 V8s command top dollar when restored properly and offer one of the best driving experiences on the market. Parts supply is healthy and various specalists are dotted throughout the land for when the going gets tough.
There’s 103,000km upon the odometer and the vendor claims this readout to be genuine. We have no reason to disbelieve him, as the 928 appears to be 100% complete and mostly original. He’s also got all the relevant paperwork lined up should the winning bidder wish to have the Porsche exported.
