XK150 estate joins Bowie's Volvo 262 at Gstaad sale
Unique Jaguar and David Bowie's Volvo will head the Oldtimer Galerie's Gstaad sale on December 29
A Volvo 262C originally owned by music legend David Bowie is to be auctioned at the Oldtimer Galerie sale in Gstaad, Switzerland on December 29.
The car is one of the later series, rather than one of the early cars, which were all silver. Accordingly, it is finished in black with a black vinyl roof and cream leather.
The 262C is said to have been inspired by Henry Ford II, who visited Volvo in the mid 1970s and brought a Lincoln Continental MkIV for use while in Sweden. This car fascinated Volvo executives, who doubtless felt that their own version would sell well in America.
The 262C used the 2.8-litre PRV V6, sat on the same wheelbase as the 264 saloon, and featured a roofline which was 4in lower than its saloon sister. One of just 6622 Volvo 262Cs produced, this car retains a copy of the original registration document in the name of David Robert Jones. It is estimated to sell at CHF 65,000-75,000.
The former Douglas Hull 1959 Jaguar XK150 estate will join it at the sale. Bought new as a 3.8 Coupé and subsequently upgraded to S specification, the car was bought in 1965 by racer Douglas Hull. Hull had the car converted to estate specification by Peels of Kensington and it was used to tow Peter Lindsay’s single seat ERA racers to events.
Hull couldn't resist entering races himself though – and notably beat the ERAs on several occasions to the chagrin of Lindsay. Restored by Peter Janssen in 1996, the car has since been entered in several concours events. With seven full binders of history and a fresh MoT, this unique piece of racing history is estimated to sell at CHF 210,000-230,000.
