A pair of classic 1950s sports cars will head Bonhams' Scottsdale auction next January, one of which was raced by a driver considered the greatest to never win a Formula 1 world title, Sir Stirling Moss.

Once belonging to legendary American sportscar racing team Team Cunningham, the first of two cars announced is a 1959 Lister-Jaguar Sports Racer, driven by motorsport legend Moss and his American team-mate Walt Hansgen.

The car was a winner in the SCCA C-Modified National Championship. This Frank Costin-designed coachbuilt model – chassis BHL 123 and engine LC1299-8 – is considered to be one of the most original examples of the car in existence. Not only that, but it has a motorsport pedigree to match.

This year Lister has launched two more Jaguar-based high-performance vehicles, both of which sold out quickly. The latter of the two, an SUV based on the Jaguar F-Pace, will be its most powerful car ever at 670bhp.

The older of the two announced cars is the 1952 Maserati A6G 2000 Spider, one of only three ever built. This Italian beauty has coachwork designed by Frua, who put his name to many Maseratis.

A high level of research, documentation and restoration has gone into this car, and with that kind of attention and precision it’s been a regular at concours events across the globe, including the world-renowned Pebble Beach and Villa d’Este.

The auction takes place in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 17 at the scenically located Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. Previous editions of the auction have broken marque records for numerous manufacturers, including supercar makers Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche.
