The Formula Junior races are the conclusion of a three-year world tour marking the category’s 60th anniversary. The tour started in South Africa at the start of 2016, and has included over 100 races across four continents.

Formula Junior started in 1958 as an affordable stepping stone for young drivers aiming for Formula 1, with a concept of single-seater chassis and a 1.0 or 1.1-litre production engine. The series quickly became a hit, and several hundred cars from a variety of different makes have been raced all over the world.

Underlining the talent that the series nurtured, the four Silverstone Classic races are dedicated to a quartet of F1 champions who graduated from Formula Junior: Jim Clark, John Surtees, Denny Hulme and Jochen Rindt.

In order to accommodate the sizeable turn-out, the grids at Silverstone Classic will be split into front and rear-engined categories, with individual races for both on Saturday and Sunday. Each race will have 54 starters, and the presence of 10 reserves mean capacity fields are guaranteed.

‘As the world’s biggest classic motoring racing festival, the Silverstone Classic is no stranger to setting new world records. We’re thrilled that these unprecedented numbers of Formula Juniors are adding to the Classic’s astonishing roll of honour,’ said event director Nick Wigley.

‘What’s more, the fiercely fought Formula Junior encounters are always among some of the most exciting on the race card. Now, with more than 50 cars slipstreaming each other as they dice around the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, we are all going to be treated to some truly spectacular action as these incredible diamond jubilee celebrations scale new heights.’
