Rennsport Reunion to host Porsche tractor race

Yes, Porsche made tractors. And they've not been left out of its 2018 Rensport Reunion at Laguna Seca either – but don't expect any lap records!

The Rennsport Reunion is a celebration of all things Porsche and motorsport as some of the most iconic machines descend on Laguna Seca. Porsche is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, so the event is set to be even more spectacular — we already know that Porsche No.1 will be attending. An unexpected announcement comes in the form of a classic Porsche tractor race.

More classic Porsche

That’s right, for those who don’t know, Porsche put its air-cooled engineering into more than just sports cars. Two models exist in the form of the single-cylinder Junior and three-cylinder Super tractors, both manufactured until 1963. At the 2018 Rennsport Reunion these classic workhorses will line up on the grid for the race of their lives.

A Le Mans style start will see drivers run to their tractor before starting the diesel engines and haring off at a pace that rivals a Porsche 911 — we’re kidding, these tractors' top speed is less than 20mph. The course won’t consist of of a full lap, instead the tractors will compete over the first five corners, but even this is expected to take 15 minutes.

Porsche built tractors in partnership with industrial firm Mannesmann from 1957 to 1963. Porsche-Diesel-Motorenbau GmbH as it was known, built a factory in southeastern Germany and saw great success with 125,000 vehicles being produced, dwarfing the number of sports cars Porsche was building at the time. Today they are seen as collectors items, even frequently attend events such as Luftgekühlt alongside their road-going air-cooled brothers.

If you’re attending the Rennsport Reunion, you won’t want to miss the most competitive agricultural event of the year. The Rennsport Reunion runs from 27th to 30th September with the tractor race taking place at 1:15pm on Saturday and 1:40pm on Sunday.

Of course there’ll be plenty of other historic racing taking place, but this unusual competition is sure to harvest quite a crowd.
