The company, which specialises in the development of air-cooled 911s and currently dedicates itself to remastering the iconic 993, has called its new carbon body creation the 'Sport Touring'. It showed off its latest tuned 993-generation 911, finished in custom deep crimson and lightly-glossed Solar Red paint, at the recent Rennsport Reunion VI Porsche festival at Laguna Seca.
To undertake the carbon conversion Gunther Werks starts with a 993-generation 911 donor car – customers can supply their own or Gunther Werks can find one – then strips the vehicle to a bare monocoque and fits the striking carbon fibre body onto it. It also replaces the standard engine with a 4.0-litre flat-six with 430bhp.
The Sport Touring's carbon fibre body is 25mm wider at each corner which allows Gunther Werks to fit wider wheels and tyres for improved handling. Other upgrades include adaptive dampers from JRZ and massive carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes.
The interior is in keeping with the exterior as there are carbon sport seats in a matching shade of red with charcoal grey touches. The dashboard has a similar finish. The 911's small rear seats are ripped out and carbon fibre panels cover the area.
Customisability options are almost limitless; each vehicle is tailored to the customer. As was the case with its previous 400R, Gunther Werks will only build 25 examples of the Sport Touring and the first customer deliveries are already underway. The company has been tight-lipped about the Sport Touring’s price though the 400R started at around £404,000 (or $525,000) before options like luxury leather upholstery were added.
‘The response we received after debuting the first Sport Touring model at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering this year was incredible,’ said Gunther Werks CEO Peter Nam. ‘We thought the Rennsport Reunion would be the perfect event to showcase the next Gunther Werks conversion because the event has become synonymous with some of the greatest Porsches ever made.’
Rennsport Reunion takes place every three to four years and is a weekend-long event that celebrates Porsche race cars by displaying and racing them around the Laguna Seca circuit. Over 500 historic and customer vehicles were on display this year, with 350 of those participating in competition laps. The 2018 event was particularly special as it marked the culmination of Porsche’s 70th anniversary celebrations and the end of the 918 Evo World Tour.
