This unique Porsche is the ultimate hairdresser’s car
Owned by a respected German hairstylist, this 1976 Porsche 935 GR. 5 Turbo by Kremer boasts a unique paint scheme and upgraded turbo. The bespoke Porsche will feature in RM Sotheby's December 8 sale
This 1979 Porsche 911 Turbo is different to most. Originally a special order, tailor made with a bespoke Ice Green Metallic paint scheme over green leather interior, the unusual Autobahn warrior was optioned with rear fog lamps, Pirelli tyres, black roof liner, air conditioning and a then state-of-the-art Blaupunkt sound system. Meet the 935 GR. 5 Turbo by Kremer - coming to auction with RM Sotheby's Petersen Museum sale on Saturday, December 8.
Boasting such an aggressive stance, and an auction estimate of $200,000, you would imagine such a machine previously belonged to an athlete or figure of political power – but you would be wrong. Rather, the turbocharged flat-six went with a 'well-known hairstylist in Heidelberg, Germany'.
It remains a lazy stereotype to brandish any coupé as a ‘hairdresser’s car’, yet that’s exactly what we have here. Except, where lesser machines merely walk the walk, this Porsche talks the talk.

The hairdresser in question had the Turbo modified with a 935K package from Cologne-based Kremer Racing, adding to the plethora of performance modifications already festooned upon the iconic shape.
Changes included custom fiberglass bodywork, a dual quad-tipped exhaust and the installation of power-adjustable Zender bucket seats to match the special-order green door panels, carpeting, and dash. A period high-end sound system with integrated equaliser was also installed, alongside a CB radio connected to a corded phone. The end result was striking enough to land the 935 a prominent display stand throughout the 1976 Munich Auto Show.
Capturing public and critical attention, the well-heeled elite fell over themselves to acquire the German hairdresser’s Porsche when it surfaced on the open market. Purchased by Leo Clignett in the mid-1980s, the new owner had the engine, drivetrain and framework inspected by Porsche specialist Peter Drux. Confirmed to be in ‘excellent condition’, the vehicle was then shipped to New York for a showcasing assignment within an exotic car salon.
A buyer was already lined up, yet upon experiencing the immense power on tap during a test drive, the prospective buyer then backed out. The Porsche was consequently shipped off to LA, then New Mexico, where the 935 was sold as part of a real estate deal.
Today, this eye-catching Porsche retains its period Kremer modifications with less than 41,000 miles on the odometer. Powered by its numbers-matching 3.0-litre engine, mated to a four-speed manual transaxle, power output will have most contemporary rivals floored.
The car was repainted in its original Ice Green Metallic within the past five years, including new exterior graphics. Riding on colour-matched Fuchs alloy wheels recently fitted with a new set of Michelin TB tyres, an engine-out service was completed in November 2018.
Accompanied by its respective factory Certificate of Authenticity, service records from 2014 to 2018, alongside the relevant correspondence including old scanned photos from the car’s importer, as investment fodder or a new weekend toy for the brave, this Porsche is sure to get heads turning.
