When it comes to star cars of motorsport past, there aren’t many racing series which can rival Peter Auto’s calendar of events. Having featured the Le Mans Classic and Tour Optic Auto 2000 as its headline events this year, its calendar drew to a close last weekend with the Imola Classic, taking place at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari.

Two years after its last foray to Imola, Peter Auto returned for another edition of the Imola Classic and brought with it a typical smorgasbord of racing classics, ranging from exceptional pre-1966 vintage to Group C machines which raced in-period until 1993.

More classic racing

Group C featured a familiar contingent of machinery. Most eye-catching of all are the ex-TWR Jaguar XJR11 and XJR14, Nissan R90CK, Porsche 956C and 926Cs. But none would take the spoils in race one – instead, Steve Tandy piloting a Spice SE90C scored victory from pole. He wouldn’t manage it twice though, as the unique Gebhardt C91 won out in race two with Michael Lyons at the wheel.

Some incredible machinery populated The Greatest’s Trophy (aptly named as it is), with several Ferrari 250 GTs joined by other Italian classics like the Bizzarrini 5300 GT and Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ. But all the Italian cars were beaten on home soil, two Porsche 904s taking one win each.

Sixties’ Endurance offered up a feast for both the eyes and the ears, with roaring V8s from the dominant pair of Shelby Cobra 289s complimented by the beauty of the Jaguar E-type.

Ford and BMW fans will have been hooked on the Heritage Touring Cup, with wall-to-wall Capris, Escorts, 3.0 CSLs and 635 CSis battling for glory. Two Capris sandwiched a 3.0 CSL on the podium at the conclusion of an hour-long race, though it wasn’t all Ford v BMW – a ’72 AMC Javelin was a rare change of pace, even if it failed to finish.

With the Peter Auto season now drawn to a close, there’s only a 153 day wait until Espίritu de Montjuïc at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which returns after a successful inaugural event this year.
