Classics for sale: was this Paul McCartney’s Lamborghini 400GT?
Despite initial speculation, it seems that this Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 belonged to the former Beatle in 1968 – and it’s going up for auction on September 5!
This Lamborghini 400GT 2+2, believed to have been owned by Sir Paul McCartney, will be offered for sale by RM Sotheby's during its London event on September 5.
Boasting just 45,454 miles from new, the 400 GT is also thought to be one of just four examples imported to the UK by official dealers Mitchell & Britten and converted to right-hand drive by Hooper & Co. Estimates for the Lamborghini range from £250,000 - £300,000.

Reportedly delivered to Paul McCartney in February 1968, and registered SLF 406F, the 400 GT 2+2 would have arrived during the height of Beatlemania; hot on the heels of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour and The White Album.
Evidence to support such a claim arrives through research undertaken by respected authors Andrew Moreland, Chris Harvey and David Hodges for their respective books – Lamborghini Supreme Amongst Exotics, The Legend and Lamborghini.
Furthermore, the 400 GT was showcased in the 1996 BBC television series Anthology of The Beatles. We believe all this points to a grand conclusion: McCartney was indeed the first owner of the rare Lamborghini. After decades of speculation, perhaps the only load of bull to be found here is on the badge up front.
It's not clear when McCartney and the 400 GT parted ways, but the new owner purchased the Lamborghini in 1979, by which point the supercar had been resprayed in its current dark red over beige interior. During this ownership, the car was driven on a regular occasion and maintained fastidiously.
It is noted that the gearbox was rebuilt in 1988 and rear suspension was rebuilt in 1994. Although the vendor sold the car in 1988, he regretted it almost immediately. In fact, he hunted the car back down and managed to reacquire it in 1996.
When out with the second owner’s custody, the car remained largely unchanged and accrued little over 800 miles. The current owner acquired the Lamborghini in 2011, shipping it out to Hong Kong where it resided in a climate-controlled showroom with Lamborghini’s official Hong Kong merchants.
Now up for grabs during RM Sothebys’ London auction on September 5, the car is accompanied by an assortment of bills, a copy of its old UK V5 for SLF 406F, as well as period sales brochures, a reproduction parts manual and a logbook.
