One-off specials to headline London Classic Car Show
The last front-engined car to win a grand prix, centre-steer Land Rover, Coombs Jaguar and other rarities will star at the Excel, London, classic car show
The London Classic Car Show will focus on Specials this year, with grand prix-winning cars and one-off prototypes driven through the February 15-18 exhibition.
Over 50 unique road and race cars will run at the show at ExCel London next month, with live demonstrations taking place in the indoor arena, running along the ‘Grand Avenue’.
A 1960 Ferrari 246 Dino that was the last front-engine car to win a grand prix is expected to be the central attraction.
Also confirmed to run is an Alfa RLTF as raced by Enzo Ferrari and Alberto Ascari on the 1923 Targa Florio. Jaguars will be present as well with a XJ220 and XJR15 Le Mans sports car, plus the ex-John Coombs entered Mk1 complete with its famous 'BUY 1' number plate.
Notable prototypes include a ‘Centre Steer’ Land-Rover recreation. Based on a 1942 Jeep, the original featured a steering wheel mounted in the middle, an attempt to serve all global export markets. A ‘Twini’ – a twin-engined, four-wheel drive Mini – from 1963 that featured an additional 997cc Cooper engine in the boot and was designed for motorsport is also lined-up.
Among the motoring pioneers will be the 1907 Stanley H4 ‘Gentleman’s Speedy Roadster’ and 1916 Packard Twin Six Typhoon. Only two of the 80mph H4s were ever made and the only known survivor is coming to ExCeL from its home in the Isle of Man Motor Museum. The Typhoon is a one-off recreation of an experimental car built by Packard to set a new land-speed record of 103.5mph in 1915.
Classic cars with a modern twist will feature as well, including a Ford Cortina Mk2 powered by a turbocharged V8 from a Lotus Esprit and the Eagle Speedster – a reimagined Jaguar E-type.
The sole surviving 1939 Daimler DB18 Drophead Coupé – the car used by Winston Churchill to address the crowds during his election campaigns – will join alongside specials from Lamborghini, including a super-rare Miura SV Jota and 1980s LM002 off-roader.
Event director Bas Bungish said: ‘I think it’s fair to say that we’ve massively over-achieved in rounding up such an incredible – and eclectic collection – of truly special machines.
‘At one extreme we have a unique vintage steam car from the dawn of motoring and a prototype Land Rover with its steering wheel in the middle, at the other extreme an unprecedented gathering of Formula 1 cars. It’s a mind-blowing collection that visitors will not only be able to see on static display but also hear as they rumble up and down The Grand Avenue.’
Tickets for the event are available on the show's website.
