NASCAR legend Richard Petty to sell title-winning cars in May
NASCAR's most successful driver is sending a host of cars, trophies and memorabilia to auction, having run out of room in his museum
Richard Petty, the most successful NASCAR driver in history, is to auction some of his race-winning cars, trophies and memorabilia during a special auction in Las Vegas on May 12.
Affectionately known as ‘The King’, Petty won a record 200 races during his NASCAR career. From 1,184 starts he won the series title seven times, claiming the Daytona 500 title seven times also.
Now 80-years-old, Petty will make a special appearance at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Nevada next week, ahead of the Julien’s Auctions sale on May 12.
Lots provided by the NASCAR Hall of Fame star include his 1974 championship winning Dodge Charger. Petty drove the car to 31 wins that year, including his fifth Daytona 500 victory. Wearing its famous red and blue livery, a theme that followed Petty throughout his career, it is estimated to command an auction price of $400,000.
The 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, with which he won his seventh and final series title could reach a final price of $300,000, while Petty’s 1967 Southern 500 winners trophy – forming part of his 27 wins that season, including ten consecutive victories – carries an estimate between $100,000 and $200,000.
At the more modern end, a 2017 Ford Tribute Mustang with 820bhp could sell for anywhere between $120,000 and $140,000. It is the 43rd and final car in the limited production run, denoting the famous number with which Petty ran throughout his career.
The auction follows Petty telling the Associated Press that he was out of room in his North Carolina museum.
‘We feel like we've got enough stuff in the museum and none of my kids really want it.
‘They've got enough of their own junk. So we got together and said hey, let's throw some stuff out there and see if there are other people interested in some of the stuff we've got.
‘We've got a little bit of everything. Some of the uniforms, some stuff that really meant something in my career.’
The auction will be broadcast live and online.
