Mullin’s French classic collection heading to Monterey
World-famous automotive museum to take seven French classics – including Bugatti Atlantic 57SC – to August’s concours extravaganza
The Mullin Automotive Museum will be taking seven of its stunning classics on tour this August. It’s set to showcase the stars of its L’époque des Carrossiers: The Art and Times of the French Coachbuilders exhibition at Monterey Car Week, where they will be seen at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering and the world-renowned Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance among other events.
The seven cars have been on show in Mullin’s museum since April. The star of this line-up is the 1936 Bugatti Atlantic Type 57SC, which will be displayed on the rolling grasses of the Quail Lodge & Golf Club.

The Atlantic is the first of three models that were produced by Bugatti. Marked by riveted flanges on a blue all-aluminium body, this model is the only surviving Aéro Coupé – a designation given to the first two cars that were mechanically very similar to the Aérolithe Coupé. Delivered new in 1936 to Britain’s Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild, the third Baron Rothschild, the car has had only a handful of owners in its 80-year history.
Earlier this year it won the Peninsula Classics Best of the Best award, which is given to the best car from eight of the biggest concours in the world. The Bugatti gained its entry for having won the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille.
Meanwhile, two Citroëns from the Mullin collection will be on show at the world’s foremost concours event, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The first of which, the Henri Chapron-built 1965 DS19 Majesty, is one of only 27 models ever produced. Known for its higher and more angular roofline, the car was ordered by Rene Gaston-Dreyfus in 1964, with particular specifications including striking metallic paint and technologically advanced accessories. It will be a one-of-a-kind feature at the world-class event.
The second car is the aerodynamic 1963 DS19 Concorde, which also boasts hydropneumatic suspension. The bodywork on this car was handbuilt by Chapron himself.
Monterey’s Motorsports Reunion is held at the Laguna Seca Raceway, and offers the opportunity for classic racing cars to be driven as intended.
Setting the pace will be a 1925 Bugatti 35C Grand Prix. In its original configuration as a 35A, the car raced at Brooklands with considerable success, and subsequently competed in Ireland. The car was restored in 1986, and joined Mullin’s collection five years later.
A 1938 Talbot-Lago Type 26 SS Roadster with Le Mans experience, and a 1946 Delage D6 Grand Prix – which secured podium finishes at the 1948 Paris 12-hours, and the Le Mans 24-hours and Spa 24-hours in 1949 – will also make an appearance. The Delage is one of only five in existence.
The final member of the Mullin French classics collection is the 1950 Talbot-Lago Type 26 Grand Prix, which helped cement France’s place on the world motorsport stage. With its twin ignition plugs and sleek tapered body, the car was once able to reach 166mph. Since acquiring the car in 1992, Peter Mullin has driven it in vintage racing events all over the world.
