Morgan releases teaser images and video of 50th anniversary Plus 8
Last chance to buy a normal-aspirated V8 Morgan Plus 8 – but it's going out in style, with 50 special editions to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the model
Morgan is to produce 50 special-edition models to mark the 50th anniversary of its V8-powered Plus 8 model – and it has released these pictures and video of the new car ahead of its official reveal at the Geneva motor show on March 6.
More than 6000 Plus 8s have been built over the last 50 years at Morgan’s Pickersleigh Road home, despite a break from 2004 when the original Rover V8 was finally – sadly – retired and the model temporarily replaced by the V6. The Plus 8 then returned in 2012, powered by a modern BMW V8 engine.
The teaser images show a blue lacquered paint finish, as a nod to Morgan's first Plus 8 production model (known as MMC11), with hand-painted yellow accents around the car’s iconic front grille, along the bonnet and on the rear towing eyes.
The first Plus 8 was the brainchild of then-managing director Peter Morgan, and was revealed to the public at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1968. The reborn 2012 Plus 8 looked virtually the same as the classic, but was proportionally larger.
It featured a lightweight aluminium chassis and 4.8-litre BMW engine, as used in the Aero range. It weighed just 1100kg, making it one of the lightest V8 passenger cars in the world, with a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.
The Plus 8 50th Anniversary Edition will be the last Morgan sports car to feature the naturally aspirated V8 engine.
Steve Morris, managing director of Morgan Motor Company, said: 'This 50th Anniversary Edition is a fitting illustration of the Plus 8’s beauty and finesse, coupled with raw exhilaration and capability. Performance has underpinned every one of the Plus 8s that have driven out of our factory gates for 50 years and we’re excited to reveal the car in full in Geneva.'
Jon Wells, head of design at Morgan Motor Company, said: 'Firmly established as Morgan’s crowning vehicle for 50 years, the Morgan Plus 8 continues to pioneer new technology within the classic Morgan bloodline. When combined with an uncompromising attention to craftsmanship, luxury and material choice, there is no more desirable Gentleman racer.'
