Unique Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss art car might be a bargain
The unique Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss is a work of art, but this example in more ways than one. Finished with a beautiful Stirling Moss mural, it's now for sale
The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is a pretty special car in its own right. This halo model was a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren — of which Mercedes owned a 40% stake. Serving as a goodbye kiss, a rare Stirling Moss model was produced that harked back to the original SLR Moss drove in the 1955 Mille Miglia.

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was the fruit of the two brands working together. At the time McLaren were enjoying success in Formula One powered by Mercedes engines, so this road-going venture made a lot of sense. After some squabbling over the format the car should take, supercar or GT, the end result was the super-GT we know and love. Packed full of advanced technologies, the SLR became a defining car of the early 2000s.
Mercedes launched a handful of updates and special edition models, including a ‘722 Edition’ that harked back to Stirling Moss’ victory in the Mille Miglia. However, the greatest homage to Moss came in the form of the one-of-75 SLR Stirling Moss cars that took the form of a modern-day barchetta road racer. This unique run of cars would be the SLR’s swansong after a seven-year production run.
Powered by the same supercharged 5.4-litre engine, its output was increased to 651bhp allowing for a 217mph top speed. This example situated in United Arab Emirates presents an even more unique take on the already rarified SLR. Murals of Moss’ victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia are displayed along the car’s length and on its substantial bonnet. These echoes of the past are a firm reminder of what motivated the design of this very car.
The car itself appears in excellent condition, though there are very little details accompanying the listing. A model identical to this was once on public displayed at Mercedes-Benz World UK, and considering the cars rarity and unusual livery, we reckon it might be the same car.
Unlike the SLR Stirling Moss from a couple of week ago, this example is a relative bargain at $1.9 million (£1.5m) vs the $3.35m (£2.6m) of the white example. What you’re buying in this SLR is not only a biblical supercar, but also a work of art.
