Colin McRae Impreza to star at Wales Rally GB’s Rally Village
Colin McRae's iconic blue and yellow Subaru Impreza will be on display at Wales Rally GB's free-to-enter Rally Village
Of the many British rallying icons – Paddy Hopkirk, Roger Clark, Tony Pond and Richard Burns to name but a few – one stands above the rest in the British public’s eye; the late, great Colin McRae. A swashbuckling Scot who lived on the edge, his flat-out style made him the most recognisable of rally drivers, not only at home, but across the globe.
To celebrate his legacy, Wales Rally GB will be showing off his 1996 Subaru Impreza at its Rally Village in Deeside, allowing rally fans to get up and close with one of McRae’s most famous machines for free.

McRae clinched three rally victories with his 1996 Impreza, coming less than a year after his sole world championship title the previous season. Scoring wins at the Acropolis Rally, Rally Sanremo and Rally Catalunya, McRae finished as runner-up to Mitsubishi rival Tommi Mäkinen.
Despite its in-period career ending 22 years ago, next weekend represents a Wales Rally GB debut for McRae’s 1996 Impreza, having been left off the world championship calendar that year.
Though usually sitting centre stage within Prodrive’s Heritage Centre in Banbury, McRae’s iconic blue and yellow chariot will be wheeled out for all to see at the Deeside service park from Thursday 4 to Sunday 7 October, with free admission throughout.
For fans of rallying’s past, AutoClassics is supporting Wales Rally GB’s Rally Legends display on the Promenade at Llandudno, featuring a swathe of rallying icons. Group B legends including the MG Metro 6R4, Renault 5 Maxi Turbo and Nissan 240RS will be joined by other historically significant rallying machines, with a Triumph TR7 V8, Lancia Stratos and Opel Manta among the highlights.
These classic machines will also be on show at Llandudno’s central Mostyn Street on Sunday and, for those spectating on the famed Great Orme stage, the cars will parade through in-between runs by the current world championship machinery.
