Steve McQueen's 'On Any Sunday' motorcycle for sale
The 1970 Husqvarna ridden by the Hollywood actor in the famous documentary is to be auctioned by Bonhams – along with a one-owner-from-new 1949 Brough Superior
The Husqvarna ridden by Steve McQueen in the film On Any Sunday, and on which he appeared shirtless on the cover of Sports Illustrated, is to be offered for sale at a Bonhams auction in Birmingham, Alabama in October.
The 1970 'Husky' 400 Cross was owned by the Hollywood legend, and comes with extensive documentation, including the ownership card from the California Department of Motor Vehicles naming Solar Productions (McQueen’s production company).
McQueen's entry form for the 1970 Saddleback 500 Senior Race, and a lucky penny – an uncirculated 1960 1¢ coin (1960 being the birth year of son Chad) – that was found inside a clear plastic case tucked away in the cavity of the motorcycle between the engine and frame are also included in the sale.

- Steve McQueen's famous Bullitt Mustang
- Cars and bikes with McQueen connections for sale
The 1971 documentary was funded by McQueen, and focussed on the many different forms of motorcycle sport taking place around the USA every weekend – or at least every Sunday. It's become a cult production, as much for its cinematic methods as for McQueen's appearance.
The auction house has also announced another 'holy grail' motorcycle for the sale, a 1949 Vincent Black Lightning, of which only around 30 were built. This one was ordered new for Swiss racer and NSU factory team racer Hans Stärkle.
It's the second example built, and is the earliest, most original example in existence. A Black Lightning holds the world record for the most valuable motorcycle ever sold at auction, following the sale by Bonhams in Las Vegas earlier this year when the Australian Speed Record bike sold for $929,000.
'The significance of these two motorcycles can’t be underscored enough,' says Ben Walker, Bonhams head of motorcycles. 'One is truly a legend in every regard and the other is monumentally iconic. We’ve offered a multitude of important motorcycles at Bonhams over the years but these are real standouts.'
The Bonhams sale will be held during the Barber Vintage Festival on Saturday, October 6 at the Barber Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Details about the auction can be found here.
