How welcome a fabulously fitted and comfortable interior must have felt at the end of a filming shift, as Marilyn climbed aboard this Cadillac to head home each night. Owned by the Twin Falls Yellow Cab & Limousine Company, this highly-expensive machine was reserved for the use of elite clientele in the scenic Sun Valley district, also employed in May 1956 to take Monroe between Bus Stop filming locations. Now, courtesy of Daniel Schmitt & Co, Marilyn's Cadillac can be yours for just shy of $70,000 (£55,000, €63,000).
Included amongst the big names chauffeured within this high-end Detroit limousine were Bing Crosby, Janet Leigh, Ann Sheridan, Lydia DuPont. Boasting a superior ‘magic carpet’ ride over period rivals and an incredibly spacious cabin, there were few models that could rival the way a Cadillac 60 Special Fleetwood delivered society's megastars to their appointments. However, of all the A-listers to frequent the cabin, the iconic Marilyn Monroe tops the bill.
At this point in her acting career, Marilyn was battling for increased control over her movie roles, alongside efforts to cultivate an altogether more grown-up image for herself within the industry. With photographer Milton Greene, she founded the company Marilyn Monroe Productions and soon after opted for more a subtle approach to costumes and make-up, as showcased with her Bus Stop character 'Cherie'.
However, other elements in Monroe’s day-to-day activities remained just as glamorous as they’d ever been, including the cars used as her personal transportation. This Cadillac 60 Special Fleetwood was therefore a fitting choice with its long wheelbase, decorative chrome and showroom position as Cadillac's flagship sedan at the time.
This motorcar possessed notable razzle-dazzle in addition to the sleek reputation Cadillac already boasted, offering power in reserve courtesy of the 331 CID 16-valve OHV V8. Equipped with a Carter carburettor and equalized manifold, the engine delivered 215hp and was capable of breaching 104mph.
Manufactured in 1954, this Cadillac was fitted with power-assisted brakes and an improved steering system for simpler manoeuvring. Meanwhile, General Motor's 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission provided particularly smooth changes while the intake silencer ensured this model kept to the ‘silent running’ Cadillac was already renowned for.
Since its days among the stars of Hollywood, this Cadillac 60 Special Fleetwood has benefitted from some cosmetic restoration and remains in wonderful condition throughout. With a low odometer reading of only 63,822 miles (103,000km) and a fantastic history backed up by articles and photographs about the car’s history, this Cadillac oozes star quality that is certain to appeal to classic investors and movie-buffs alike.
