What to see during Land Rover Legends at Bicester Heritage
Bicester Heritage has played host to the first day of Land Rover Legends’ inaugural event. Missed out? Don’t panic! Here’s what to see on Sunday
The very first Land Rover Legends show is well underway at Bicester Heritage, the dubious weather failing to deter diehard Landy enthusiasts from getting up close with the marque’s most celebrated vehicles.
A parade of early Solihull automotive icons and talks from Camel Trophy winners Joe and Bob Ives, alongside Tim Slessor of Oxford and Cambridge expedition fame, wrapped up Saturday’s action. Couldn’t get along? Don’t panic! If you missed out, it’s all kicking off again tomorrow from 10am.

Repeating the schedule from today, TV’s Mark Evans will be presenting on the live stage with Joe, Bob and Tim, alongside the drivers and custodians of Land Rover’s famous ‘Beaver Bullet’ Range Rover and Pre-production L03. Not to mention the Series I and II parade, celebrating the oldest in Land Rover’s heritage vehicles.
The very first Land Rover Legends awards will also be handed over to the deserving victors at 3.30pm, with trophies gifted to those with the most original Landy, best restored Land Rover and best bespoke vehicle. You can find out more about the finalists here.
A huge and diverse range of Land Rover models have entered the competition, including an all-original Freelander 1 (you may guffaw, but original unmolested examples are seriously rare), a seldom-seen 50th anniversary Defender and the most battered, but ultimately cool, Series II you’ll ever set eyes on!
Not to mention a one-owner from new, apparently never driven in the rain (!), first-generation Discovery and Range Rover Overfinch Holland & Holland. All rather drool worthy...
We are lucky enough to have been asked by the event organisers to join Land Rover Legends’ judging panel, sending out our resident Land Rover enthusiast with the task. Besides our Calum, the judging panel consists of:
- Patrick Cruywagen, Editor of Land Rover Monthly
- Philip Bashall, Manager of The Dunsfold Collection
- Chris Bishop, Managing Director of Bishops 4x4 Ltd
- David Bond, Director of Footman James
- Paul Sweetenham, one of the founders of British watch brand Farer
For those seeking the finest of offerings from Solihull’s legendary saga, the Land Rover 110 that took Joe and Bob to victory during the 1989 Camel Trophy, one of two Series Is from the Oxford and Cambridge expedition to Singapore, a fleet of the very earliest Series II models and the Freelander/Maestro testbed are only some of the distinct 4x4s on display. The Dunsfold Collection have brought along several Land Rovers deserving of worship, including the factory Series IIA V8 special. Quite a crowd pleaser!
Fancy a live-action experience? Land Rover themselves are offering passenger rides in the new Discovery 5 over a manmade off-road course. We warn you, however, it’s not for those afraid of heights…
Jaguar Land Rover are also present with their Classic department, showcasing a selection from Land Rover's 70-year history. 'Swampy' the Range Rover is present. Best you ask one of the Land Rover staff about this one, as you probably wouldn't believe the story if we told you.
As a final note, staff writer Calum’s ex-Military Series III will be undergoing the second part of an impromptu electrical rebuild, the vehicle having chosen to go on strike during the most befitting of weekends. This feat, lined with curse words, can be viewed outside the AutoClassics office on site at Bicester Heritage…
