This is Kit Harington and Rose Leslie's Land Rover wedding car
The media turned out in force for the wedding of Game of Thrones stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie, but the highlight for us was the wedding car – a battered Defender 90!
Perhaps bucking the trend of employing pristine yet garish vehicles to whisk celebrity honeymoon couples off into the sunset, Kit Harington and Rose Leslie have set the Land Rover community ablaze after departing their wedding in a battered Land Rover Defender 90.
Tying the knot on Saturday (June 23) after a six-year relationship, Game of Thrones stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie were united ‘north of the wall’ in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, with cast and crew descending on Rayne’s All-Saints Church for the ‘royal’ wedding of the year.

However, the biggest highlight for us was the 1991 Land Rover 90 used for Kit and Rose’s first drive as husband and wife. Although unknown if the blue Landy actually belongs to Kit or Rose, the 4x4’s history proves that this particular Defender has wanted for nothing – despite appearing as though Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons have already had a go at it.
The published work undertaken on the Land Rover shows dedication to the vehicle, where others would simply have seen it off to the scrapper. With this in mind, it’s highly unlikely that the Defender was rented for the event; this was a personal statement on a significant day. Chances are, this chunk of British automotive heritage belongs to either Kit, Rose (who was born in Aberdeen) or someone in their family.
Far from being tarted up by Game of Thrones’ award winning technical team, the bruised Defender 90 appears to wear its age-related marks with pride, offering the perfect automotive match for Harington's character Jon Snow's rugged attitude.
Besides, having survived the freezing conditions of House Stark's homeland, Jon would feel quite at home in the basic cabin, even with the symbolic heater providing aspirational heat. There’s plenty of room for Snow’s direwolf sidekick and enough utilitarian charm to win over any fierce inter-family rivalry, too. Olenna Tyrell may not have inflicted Joffrey with such an intense demise if she had been gifted a Defender 90…
Deemed the ultimate incarnation of Land Rover’s classic design, a pinpoint between the leaf-sprung Series vehicles and trademark Td5 of which the Defender remains renowned for, the 2495cc engine offers performance much like the crumbling glacier witnessed at the end of last season.
There’s 68bhp under the bonnet, with the four-cylinder lump churning out 114lb ft of torque at 1800rpm. That’s less power than Prince Oberyn yielded. However, as the image of cool nothing does it better than a proper Landy, scars and all.
Although Rose Leslie’s character – Ygritte – was killed off in season 4, Kit will be reprising his role as Jon Snow in the final season, scheduled to premiere during early 2019. We can’t wait!
