Soviet IZh 2125 ‘Kombi’ making comeback as Kalashnikov electric car
You may associate Kalashnikov with making arms, but – similar to Jaguar – it has just unveiled a retro-inspired electric car, and it has Tesla in its sights
Following shortly after Jaguar announced its electric E-type, Kalashnikov has launched its own retro-inspired electric vehicle – with the car’s looks are based on the 1970s IZh 2125 ‘Kombi’ Soviet hatchback.
Yes, that is the same Kalashnikov that’s better known for making arms such as the AK-47 machine gun. The brand has presented its CV-1 electric car prototype at a defence expo outside Moscow.

Kalashnikov’s plans for the car are bold, too, as it’s hopeful of taking on Tesla with its electric technology.
‘This technology will let us stand in the ranks of global electric car producers such as Tesla, and be their competitor,’ RIA-Novosti quotes the Kalashnikov press office as saying.
‘We were inspired by the experience of global market leaders in developing our concept.’
Its holding company Kalashnikov Concern has called the CV-1 an ‘electric supercar’, and says it has developed cutting-edge features such as a ‘revolutionary’ inverter. The car can travel 217 miles on a single charge.
The IZh 2125 Kombi on which the new car is based was a compact car produced by the Soviet manufacturer IZh from 1973 to 1997, which had some notable sales success in the USSR in the 1970s. The 45-year-old Kombi design was itself based on the Moskvitch 412, a small family car produced by Soviet manufacturer MZMA/AZLK in Moscow from 1967 to 1975, and by IZh from 1967 to 1982.
Kalashnikov has for a time been trying to expand its brand beyond that of an arms manufacturer, launching an eclectic mix of products such as lines of clothing, umbrellas and mobile-phone covers. It also recently announced the production of a new bipedal combat robot, a gold-coloured machine reportedly named ‘Igorek’.
