A Lotus Elite Super 95 once owned by legendary two-time Formula 1 champion and Indianapolis 500 winner Jim Clark will be offered for sale by RM Sotheby’s in September.

Even more amazingly, the Elite was given to Clark by Lotus boss Colin Chapman in early 1962 in lieu of payment for Clark’s services as a Team Lotus racing driver. It’s a rare opportunity to purchase one of Clark’s machines.

The original logbook is included, and is signed by the great man. The car also retains many of its original features such as its chassis plate and Bristol Aircraft body plate, while the engine matches the logbook.

This Elite is one of only 23 Super 95s made. These models boasted features still present on this car such as a more powerful engine, modified carburettors, vacuum servo-assisted brakes, long-range fuel tank and a dual-tone paint finish.

The car is also being sold with a Hobbs Mechamatic gearbox, which is not currently fitted. In effect this was the first sequential ’box, and was fitted to the car by Clark.

William Smith, car specialist at RM Sotheby’s, said: ‘Cars previously owned by Jim Clark are rarely ever sold, and this would be the ultimate collector’s item that can still be driven in spirit to this day.’

‘With the Lotus Elite, a bygone era of motorsport is represented thanks to the very obvious connection with Jim Clark, who lived and breathed the brand in its most successful era.’

The Elite is estimated to fetch between £150,000 and £200,000 at the auction, which is set to take place on September 5 at Battersea Evolution.
