If you’re a millionaire – or wishing you were one for just a few minutes – and love motorsport, particularly everything Porsche, this is your lucky day. A piece of racing history straight out of the 1980s is available in our classifieds right now, in the form of a 962 GTP racer.
Vern Schuppan and Porsche go hand in hand, having won the Le Mans 24 Hours together in 1983 piloting a 956. His ties went deeper still as time marched on, building 962Cs for himself in the late 1980s.

Though he didn’t build this particular chassis, Schuppan did drive 962-C04 on its competitive debut in the IMSA GT Championship in 1987.
Instead it was developed by Lola Can-Am engineer Jim Chapman, replacing the factory-spec sheet aluminium bulkhead with a honeycomb construction, reducing weight while keeping the chassis rigid.
Prepared for IMSA’s GTP regulations rather than Europe’s Group C regulations, it was raced three times by Bob Akin Motorsports. it was the only Porsche not raced by Akin himself, however, thanks to being the last car he purchased before winding his eponymous team up at the end of 1987.
Luckily this meant a chance for some Porsche legends to step in, namely Schuppan and his 1983 Le Mans-winning co-driver Hurley Haywood. One driver raced it more than any other, however, namely (future) sportscar veteran James Weaver, the 1989 British Touring Car Championship runner-up and 1997 Daytona 24 Hours winner.
Despite his retirement Akin initially held on to the car, passing through five owners since its eventual sale by Akin in 1991. Importantly, either side of a full restoration in 2005, more than one past owner has engaged racing specialists Sean Creech Motorsport to maintain the 962, keeping it in race ready condition.
And race it has, primarily in the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’s Group 11 class in the hands of owner Ray Langston III, at one point even partnering up with former Formula 1 driver Eric van de Poele for said races.
We could tell you about the work that was carried out in 2015 that included a 3.2 liter engine fitted with Bosch Motronic 1.2 engine management system and transmission gearing options designed specifically for racing at Daytona, Sebring, and Laguna Seca, but we think you’d rather admire its looks instead.
In 31 years its paintwork has barely changed despite touch-ups to keep it looking fresh, sporting the same Coca-Cola/Yokohama livery with which it started out sporting in IMSA all those years ago.
