Ex-Mike Hailwood Iso Grifo leads £5m May Silverstone auction
The May 19 sale features three cars that could tip the £250,000 mark courtesy of their rarity, celebrity ties and low mileage
A rare Iso Grifo once owned by motorcycle racing great and ex-Formula 1 driver Mike Hailwood is to feature in Silverstone Auctions’ May sale alongside 64 other classics.
The total lot list for the May 19 auction held in the The Wing complex at Silverstone Circuit is valued at £5.1million, with the Grifo one of three cars estimated to break the £250,000 mark.

Only 26 right-hand-drive Series I Grifos were ever built. As a December 1966 car, the GL 350 is powered by a 5.3-litre Chevrolet V8 and, as the name alludes to, produces 350bhp which is transmitted to the rear axle via a four-speed manual.
Finished in white with a red leather interior, it is estimated to sell for between £220,000 and £260,000. That figure is, in-part, due to it having been owned by 14-time Isle of Man TT winner Hailwood. He won exactly 50 percent of all grand prix bike races he ever entered before latterly scoring two podiums in F1.
The other most valuable lots in the sale are a 1947 Lancia Aprilila Farina convertible, estimated at £220,000 to £250,000 following a five-year restoration that means its conditions is ‘outstanding’. Alongside is one of only 27 Ford GTs delivered to the UK. The 550bhp V8-powered car has covered only 5000 miles since new. Its pre-sale estimate tops out at £310,000.
Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions said: 'This year’s May Sale has a fantastic line-up of significant cars, from all eras of motoring, be it a 60s sweeping coupe or a 90s track stormer, all the way up to the latest supercars. We always strive for excellence at our May Sale, and this year we’ve done it again with a fantastic collection of classics, past, present and future.’
Also included in the sale is the very first Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 to be built and a 1997 Lamborghini Diablo SV. Finished in dark green, the Diablo was delivered new to Keith Flint from The Prodigy. It is currently not fitted with a rear wing, but included in the lot is the spoiler from the race-oriented GT edition Diablo. It is thought to be the only SV ordered with this rear wing from new. Silverstone Auctions expected approximately £150,000 to be paid.
Other notables include a 1985 Renault 5 Turbo 2. Only 200 were built and this example has only had two owners in its history. It heads to auction in need of restoration, and is valued at only £30,000 with a full restored example capable of hitting six figures.
