Entries open for Three Castles rally
Now's your chance to enter the 15th Three Castles Classic Trial, which takes place in North Wales in June 2018
Entries have opened for the 15th running of the ever-popular Three Castles Trial, which takes place in North Wales on 5-8 June 2018 – and already more than 50 entries have been received by the organisers.
'We opened for entries and have accepted over 50 crews already,' says event director Ian Crammond. 'Everyone enjoys the Three Castles formula of long summer days by the sea, a high number of tests on private land, touring sections in the most beautiful scenery and carefully graded regularity sections to provide competition and variety.
'Entrants from right across the spectrum of experience like this format. This is a classic rally that is part tour, part regularity rally, part driving tests, emphasising each format on a particular day but including all of them on every day.
'The 15th Three Castles Trial will again be a three-day event with around 20 hard-surfaced driving tests, many of them in exclusive private venues, that respect the engineering of the fabulous cars people bring.'
One of the attractions of the Three Castles is that it returns each night to Llandudno, allowing entrants to keep the same hotel room throughout the event. Running through the ancient landscapes of Anglesey, Gwynedd and Clwyd in North West Wales, it has always been a sell-out success, usually attracting over a hundred entries including cars that have also participated on such prestigious events as the Mille Miglia.
For 2018, the entries already include a rare 1933 Salmson S4C, a 1927 Bentley 3/4.5 litre – the oldest car so far entered – and a 1931 Alfa Romeo 1750 GS, but there are rare post-war cars too, such as Bronwyn Burrell's original 1970 World Cup Rally Austin Maxi.
Entries are open for all classic cars of models first introduced from 1920 to 1985. Entrants book their own rooms, so an early getaway or a longer stay is easy – the emphasis is on relaxation and fun rather than it being a gruelling rally challenge.
The entry fee excluding accommodation is £2295 per team of two people until January 31, less special anniversary discount for past competitors (£15 discount for every previous Three Castles entered), and includes Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evening meals and coffee and lunch halts on the event.
AutoClassics is an official event support of the Three Castles Classic Trial, and will be reporting on the event.

The 1987 Lotus Esprit benefited from a far-reaching restyle by Peter Stevens (the McLaren F1 designer) with Kevlar reinforcing to the bodywork which improved torsional rigidity by 22% and a more spacious interior, this was known as the X180. Out went many of the sharp lines of Giugiaro, to be replaced by a more organic aero-look. It worked, too – the X180 Esprit certainly looked like a contempor
