AutoClassics selects some of the best images from the latest running of the highly scenic and unashamedly nostalgic Ennstal-Classic Rallye in Austria
The Ennstal-Classic Rallye has become a fixture on the historic calendar and this year’s 26th annual running was bigger than ever. An unashamed throwback event as encapsulated in its tagline ‘driving in the last paradise’, it is open to interesting racers built before 1973.
It takes in unfailingly stunning and varied Austrian Alpine scenery in its asphalt passes – around 450km is completed on each of the two driving days and 100,000 spectators line the route. This year over 200 teams participated and record numbers were set. The oldest car taking part was built in 1928.

Bugatti 37A - the event's oldest car
Andrea Daum-Hübner and Astrid Stüger-Hübner just before the start of the prologue in Gröbming show off the oldest car in the rally, a 1928 Bugatti 37A.
Derek Bell adds star value
Five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell was a happy participant, taking part in a Bentley Blower 4 ½-litre from 1929 – one of the oldest cars in the rally – with his wife Misti.
Under starter's orders
Cars queue up for the Gröbming prologue get-go, led by Peter Wieden and Hanni Baier-Wieden in their FIAT Simca 508 C Grolleau-Deho from 1938.
Cars pass Lake Wolfgang during the prologue – this is the Swedish entry of Robert Kvist und Joakim Kvist in their Jaguar XK 120 OTS built in 1953.
Sun on your Fastback
The sun glints as Austrians Erich Volk and Roswitha Volk in a Ford Mustang Fastback from 1964 clear a crest in the Stainach-Pürgg section.
A 1929 Pontiac Racer 6-29A Speedster, piloted by Austrian duo Toni Mörwald and Josef Brucha, turns uphill amid stunning Alpine scenery on the Postalm section.
Three cars together passing through Gröbming – Hermann Samonigg and Thomas Billicsich in a 1957 Porsche 356 A Speedster; Alexander von Essen and Josef Arwek in a 1958 Porsche 356 Speedster 1600 S; and Manfred Feldhaus and Jannik Feldhaus in a 1957 BMW 507.
Joining the jet-set
Heribert Medweschek and Günter Medweschek in a Devin D from 1961 as well as Jakob Schmied and Stefan Niedermair in a 1960 Jaguar XK 150 DHC on the bridge in front of Niederöblarn Airport in the fading sunlight.
Ex-Ferrari Formula 1 driver Arturo Merzario was another high-profile participant, running an Abarth sports car on Friday in Niederöblarn and on Saturday at the Gröbming Grand Prix.
Deopito duo at the double
The father-son team of Alexander and Florian Deopito dominated the rally from the beginning in their Volvo 122 S Rallye, taking victory for the second year in a row.
