Is this the most perfect DeLorean DMC-12?
After a £20,000 restoration process, this DeLorean DMC-12 is ready to take you back to the future. Here's your chance to bag this movie icon.
As a car the DeLorean DMC-12 leaves much to be desired. It wasn’t particularly quick when new, it wasn’t as good to drive as its rivals, and build quality wasn’t great. While it left much to be desired as a performance car, it ticked every box imaginable when it came to becoming an icon. This pristine 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 heads to auction next month.
More on DeLorean...
Even today, some 37 years after launch, the DeLorean DMC-12 looks like a product of the future. It’s naked brushed stainless-steel body designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and those gullwing doors combine to create an awe-inspiring machine. Even without its starring role in ‘Back to the Future’ that cemented it into pop culture, this Irish-built model is well known around the world.
Heading to Silverstone Auction’s NEC Classic Motor Show Sale in the UK is one of the best examples of the movie-star car we’ve in a while. Chassis SCEDT26T1CD010027 has been owned by the same family for 15 years and has seen minimal use. It has been dry stored in a dehumidified space to insure perfect preservation.
Between 2017 and 2018 DMC expert Chris Nichols from PJ Grady completed a body-off restoration to create one of the most perfect examples of the DMC-12. Everything from the bodywork to the interior received Chris’ undivided attention with he aim of making the car feel brand new again. Braided fuel lines have replaced the original rubber hoses that had a tendency to perish and potentially cause a fire, for example.
After the steel body was re-grained using the period correct horsehair re-graining process, all that’s needed to keep it looking fresh is a regular application of WD40. This restoration came to £20,000 so considering that this car’s current estimate is between £25 — £30k, we view it as a bit of a bargain.
This V6 powered sports car originally resided in America before being imported to the UK. It comes complete with all of the necessary paperwork, some 3 box files worth, not to mention numerous magazine articles and books.
