Go historic rallying for less with this Sunbeam Imp

This pocket-sized rally car could be a rare bargain for those hunting for a British classic. It's ready to hit your chosen gravel stage

So you want to fulfil your dream of being a classic rally driver, but your budget won’t stretch to an original Ford Escort or an iconic Subaru 22B? Well, you might be in luck as someone wants to downsize their British car collection by putting their dinky Sunbeam Imp rally car up for sale on Ebay.

More on rallying…

When you think of pint-sized rally cars it’s usually the Mini Cooper that springs to mind, but this Sunbeam Imp is a far rarer thing. While the Hillman Imp didn’t prove to be a sales success, it was also exported under the prestigious Sunbeam name — hence this being a US-based Sunbeam Imp.

With just 31,000-miles on the clock, this rally-prepped car has all of the makings of a highly entertaining machine. Power from its lightweight aluminium engine is sent to the rear wheels and the gearbox is mounted in the rear for better weight distribution. Factor in the short wheelbase and this little car should be a hoot to drive on loose gravel.

It looks the part too, complete with rally livery from an event a pair of Imps won in 1965, plus a fetching set of alloy wheels from a Jensen Healey. Inside there’s a set of Recaro bucket race seats, a wooden steering wheel, and not much else.

The Sunbeam appears in excellent condition with an underside shot showing no corrosion or signs of damage. It’s listing only suggest two repairs, a new window regulator and an adjustment to the steering to eliminate play.

The current bid is $6,500 with the reserve as yet unmet. This could be your chance to bag a some classic motorsport at a very respectable price.
