Classics for sale: Successful Porsche 911 Carrera RSR racer
A Porsche 911 GT with extensive history and that remains competitive in historic racing is set to go under the hammer as part of the marque’s anniversary auction
If you are an enthusiast for historic racing, both in terms of participating in current events as well as the stories of the past, then it may be hard to top this 1975 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.0.
It has an extensive racing history and has won the '75 European GT championship, it entered the Le Mans 24 Hour race twice and even for a time was owned by Oscar-winning actor and racing enthusiast Paul Newman. What’s more it is ready to go as a racer and has been competitive in historic racing events including during this season. It’s even still in its original livery.
And it could be yours as it is to be part of RM Sotheby’s Porsche 70th anniversary auction taking place in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday October 27. It is estimated to go for between $2m and $2.2m (£1,536,530 to £1,690,183).

The 911 is an evocative car in racing history, and led Porsche’s charge at the GT class after the Group 5 World Sportscar Championship rules, introduced in 1972, rendered obsolete the mighty 917 and with it the Porsche works programme of the time.
This particular 3-litre engined RSR was the eighth of only 10 built for the 1975 racing season, as well as one of only 52 built in total, and was delivered to the factory-backed Tebernum Racing team who had an ambitious programme to compete in six of the nine World Sportscar Championship rounds that year.
It had some good finishes and won the poorly-attended Coppa Florio 1000km race at Enna-Pergusa, helping Porsche take that year’s World Championship for Manufacturers. However after the car retired from the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours with engine failure Tebernum decided instead to concentre on that year’s European GT Championship.
It was a sound decision as its driver Hartwig Bertrams took that title after a strong late run, and although it is thought that this chassis for auction was shared mainly by Betrams’ teammates Clemens Schickentanz and Reine Wisell a letter in the car’s history file from Jürgen Barth to subsequent owner Robert Luth says that ‘(Bertrams) most probably won the GT championship with this car.’
It also took part in the following year’s Le Mans with popular ex-Formula 1 driver Howden Ganley added to the line-up, though again it suffered retirement, this time with driveshaft failure.
The car had further stardust added when in 1977 actor and accomplished racing driver Paul Newman purchased it. Newman had been bitten by the racing bug ever since starring in the 1969 film Winning which included attending Bob Bondurant’s racing school as part of the preparation. Newman sold the car in 1982 to noted Porsche authority Ron Armour of Orange, California.
And its racing pedigree remains this day as it is literally ready to go as a racer. Furthermore it has been a regular front-runner in historic events since its current owner acquired it in 2014. Most notably it won its class – with the current owner sharing driving duties with none other than ex-Works Porsche driver Uwe Alzen – in both the 2016 and '18 editions of the Le Mans Classic.
It’s immaculately presented in its period blue-and-white Tebernum livery and is race prepared by marque specialists and Le Mans-winning team Roock Sportsystem. It also is accompanied by current FIA HTP papers which are valid until the end of 2025 as well as a comprehensive history file.
