Classics for sale: 1987 Aston Martin V8 Vantage X-Pack
Drive like Johnny English! You may not be able to purchase the Aston Martin V8 Vantage from the film, but we’ve got one better…
If you’ve not yet been to see Rowan Atkinson’s latest entry in the Johnny English franchise, you’re missing out. Besides the trademark humour and fleet of cameo appearances from the likes of Charles Dance, Michael Gambon and Edward Fox, there’s also the finest Aston Martin of them all: the V8 Vantage.
A controversial choice perhaps, with the DB lineage commanding top dollar and market respect, but the V8 Vantage offers more clout than any DB5. With butch aesthetics and an overtly aggressive stance, the 1980s Aston of choice leaves a lasting impression – we can promise that petrolheads will leave the cinema thinking about nothing else. Well, perhaps Olga Kurylenko…

Naturally, you’re going to want one. Well, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage doesn’t come cheap. Any healthy example will push the boundaries of fiction at £200,000. Not to say that you can’t get them cheaper, but such a move will boil any individual down to a frantic mess.
As with any well-heeled British GT cruiser, these vehicles are complex and costly when things go wrong. The allure of a sub £80k example is hard to ignore, but then so are the demonic voices stalking your mind upon trying to live with eight dozen repair bills at £5k each.
To avoid having to sell your children for medical research and your wife into white slavery on a wave of mechanic’s invoices, hunt down the best example you can find. We’ve found this one – but brace yourselves for the price…
At a whisker under £500k, the financial aspect of such a vehicle could bring tears to a glass eye. But before you start reaching for the smelling salts, this V8 Vantage is more impressive than most and oozes enough provenance to warrant the asking price.
Boasting an X-pack engine, this 1987 example can rightfully claim to be ‘the flagship performance model of the range’. Once the limited edition V8 Vantage Zagato was firmly in production, attention turned to the regular V8 Vantage set-up. Splicing in the Zagato drivetrain, the X-pack trumpeted an extra dollop of power, taking output beyond 410bhp.
However, these beasts remain rare and are seldom found for sale – thus prices are steep. Really steep. What do you get for such an asking price? The answer is simple; the greatest Aston Martin V8 of them all. Bar none.
This one comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox, just to make sure that every single horsepower can be utilised. We’d budget for new rear tyres on a regular basis…
