Classics for sale: 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo in Martini livery
You want a Porsche? Tick. A 911? Tick. A turbocharged model? Tick. And in a Martini livery? Don't you worry, we have just the car in our classifieds
The NEC Classic Motor Show takes place next month, and Silverstone Auctions will be present with a variety of classics to put under the hammer. One that has recently caught our eye is this 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo, otherwise known as the Porsche 930, which has one of the most iconic liveries in motorsport and is in our classifieds.
Martini & Rossi, an alcoholic beverage distillery from Italy, has had its logo on cars since the 1960s, and a huge variety of vehicles have been adorned with its instantly recognisable dark blue, light blue and red stripes, often seen on white, red or silver backgrounds. The motorsport connection started in 1962, when two Alfa Romeo cars competing at Daytona ran with the ‘Martini & Rossi Racing Team’ name.

When advertising on racing cars was opened up in the late 1960s, Martini immediately used its forward thinking publicity department to get its branding on a few privately-ran Porsches, incidentally raced by important businessmen. It was with Porsche in which it became globally recognisable in the 1970s, winning the Le Mans 24 Hours on several occasions as title sponsor. Brand allegiance then switched to Lancia, which also competed at Le Mans, but was better known for its success on the rally stages.
The Alfa Romeo-powered Brabham Formula 1 team was another to benefit from Martini sponsorship, but worked it with a difference by running a red background, and the Italian engine supplier then inherited Martini as a sponsor when it entered touring car racing. Other F1 teams to join the Martini legend included Tecno, Lotus, Ferrari, and most recently Williams.
The Porsche’s story is just as interesting as Martini’s, having undergone a full restoration by Porsche Centre Glasgow, one of only four official Porsche Classic Centres in the United Kingdom. The reason it was restored is a surprising one, with it being part of a nationwide competition by Porsche to see who could do the best restoration of one of the marque’s classic cars.
Its 3.0-litre single turbocharged and air-cooled flat six engine has been worked on extensively, and the Porsche Centre has spent over £120,000 on parts (all bought from Porsche Classic) and man hours in bringing the 1977 classic back up to peak condition. Giving the car an extra bit of history, it’s the penultimate one to roll off the production line with right-hand drive, and Silverstone Auctions believes it to be the very last car sold to the European market before Porsche started producing the car with an upgraded 3.3-litre engine and a five-speed manual.
This model is finished in silver, with the Martini decals being easily removable. Why one would want to do that though is a mystery. The car has a dark brown leather interior, with beige pinstripe inserts, and has a period dashboard. Silverstone Auctions has a reserve on the car, which is expected to sell for somewhere between £135,000 - £155,000 ($175,030 - $200,960). More information on the sale can be found here.
