Affordable icons headline Classic Car Auctions' December sale
Classic Car Auctions' final event of the year features plenty of attainable performance cars such as an E30 BMW M3 and Renault 5 Turbo
The 1980s and 90s were boom periods for attainable performance cars. Forget about your Lamborghini Countach and Porsche 911 Turbos, some of the most iconic models of this era were ones you and I could afford. These people’s champions have appreciated over the years and are now quite collectable, with a trio of such modern classics headlining Classic Car Auction’s December sale.
More every-man performance cars…
Set to take place in the Warwickshire Event Centre, UK on December 1, one of the biggest head turners will be a highly desirable 1990 E30 BMW M3. It’s the model that started the M3 lineage and is today still regarded as one of the best. This example is finished in Alpine White with its paintwork looking particularly smart after a £5000 respray in 2016. With a complete overhaul of the braking system and a recent full service, this performance coupe is estimated to sell for between £35,000 - £40,000.
Next up is one of France’s greatest hot hatchbacks, a 1989 Renault 5 GT Turbo. It has less than 27,000 miles on the clock and looks in prime condition. The Turbo should be safer from rust than most Renault 5’s of this age as, being a Japanese import, it hasn’t been confronted with heavily salted roads during winter. This pocket rocket is expected to sell for between £15,000 - £18,000.
What would a UK auction be without a fast Ford on the roster? A 1990 Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 2 is up for grabs and comes with a series of performance upgrades. Things such as a water-cooled Garret T3 turbo has been fitted, a limited slip differential, an improved gearbox, and larger clutch gives this RS’ more punch. It has clocked 73,000-miles and is estimated at between £12,000 - £15,000.
Another ‘blue oval’ on the menu is a rare 1986 Ford Tickford Capri complete with its unique body styling. It is reported that it took 200 man-hours to transform the Capri into a Tickford thanks to intricate modifications under the bonnet. Just 85 were built, each featuring a 205bhp turbocharged V6 engine. This coupe is estimated to fetch £18,000 - £22,000.
While this has turned into something of a celebration of affordable performance, there is a Porsche 911 of note on the menu. A 1982 SC Targa represents one of the few UK supplied models and has recently undergone an extensive restoration costing over £30,000. If it sells for its estimate of £30,000 — £35,000 that would make it a bit of a steal in our eyes.
Cars can still be added to the December sale video Classic Car Auctions website, but be quick as entries close on 5th November.
