Buy Chubby Checker’s Mercedes 400SE!
Fancy a classic daily driver with musical provenance? American legend Chubby Checker’s Mercedes-Benz 400SE has appeared for sale in the AutoClassics classifieds
It may appear like most well-heeled Mercedes-Benz from the 1990s, but this 400SE - first leased and then owned by Ernest Evans, aka Chubby Checker - boasts a more interesting history than most.
Rolling down the Stuttgart production line in October 1991, Mr. Checker kept his 'Benz for 23 years – only parting with it in 2015. Responsible for songs like ‘The Twist’ and ‘Limbo Rock’, Checker traded his 400SE in for a brand new model from the same dealership that had maintained this car for over two decades.
Finished in Black Pearl Metallic (code DB-199), Checker leased this Mercedes for three years before buying the vehicle outright in 1995, utilising Mercedes’ flagship model for personal use.

Checker reportedly enjoyed the grunt offered by the 4.2-litre, 32-valve V8 amid other features that made this the last Mercedes model to be considered ‘over-engineered’.
Features include double glazing, hydraulically operated non-lockup four-speed automatic transmission, power-assisted closing doors and rear-parking markers which sprout from the rear wings.
Documentation includes a Carfax report, original owner’s manual, original lease agreement and title issued to Chubby in 1995, after the lease ended.
There are also copies of Checker’s music memorabilia, including a box of his 45 records.
Why purchase this Mercedes? It’s more than just a car – it’s an iconic vehicle owned by one of the most influential musicians to grace the airwaves. You won’t find anything else to replace it – this Benz is the true one and only.
The late Dick Clark once said, 'The three most important things that ever happened in the music industry are Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Chubby Checker.'
With all that engine power to play with, chances are you’ll be doing The Twist in no time…
