Cambridgeshire to Tokyo for BBC Children in Need – in a Toyota Yaris!
20 nations, nine weeks and 12,500 miles on some of the world’s toughest roads for BBC Children in Need – in a Yaris! Talk about an epic endurance expedition
Aiming to raise funds for BBC Children in Need, two residents of Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, have set off for Tokyo on an epic endurance expedition – with a twist. That because rather than use a 4x4 to traverse deserted, impossible roads and dank mud, the two-man Chatteris2Tokyo team has instead decided to tackle some of the planet’s toughest conditions in a Toyota Yaris.
Departing their hometown on Saturday, August 12, Dan Handley and Dave Brooks hope to reach Japan’s capital city on October 5, pit-stopping off in South Korea after an eight-week trek to Vladivostok in Russia.

Once there, Dan and Dave will spend a full week exploring Japan’s car culture, visiting race circuits, tuning garages, auto meets and the iconic Mount Fuji. Never ones to shy away from adventure, the pair will be avoiding plush hotels and will camp along the way before returning home on October 12.
To make their flight home, the Toyota Yaris is expected to average around 260 miles, or five hours of driving, per day to keep the schedule tight. Modified for added safety, reliability, comfort and the rough terrain, the expedition Yaris will return to Britain by ship.
You can get a rundown on the Toyota with Dan and Dave here:
Why a Toyota Yaris?
The pair decided that a Toyota would make for dependable transport that could be easily repairable should problems arise. A 2002 five-door model, powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and costing just £1000, the 16-year-old Yaris was purchased with a donation from their local Steven Eagell Toyota dealership.
The team can be tracked through the Chatteris2Tokyo website for instant feedback on their progress. All of us here at AutoClassics wish them the best of luck! See you on the return leg, lads…
