Three of the best cars in the world for Bonhams sale

A 1911 Mercedes that has rallied around the world, a prize-winning Saoutchik-bodied Talbot-Lago and a unique Bentley 8 Litre will be offered for sale during Monterey Car Week

Bonhams has revealed three thoroughbred cars for its Monterey Car Week sale in August during The Quail, A Motorsports Reunion event on August 24.

This is the most important week of the year for many auction houses, and there's always strong competition between the organisations to be selling the most important cars.

The three from Bonhams show a strong start, with a 1948 Saoutchik-bodied Talbot Lago, a 1931 example of the revered 8 Litre Bentley and a 'Brass Era' 1911 Mercedes 28/60 Tourer. All will have strong appeal amongst the concours crowd at Monterey in August.

1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Record Sport

This Saoutchik-bodied T26 was the company's 1950 Paris Motor Show car, and received the event’s most prestigious award, the Grand Prix du Salon. It went on to be used in photoshoots by Givenchy muse, Vogue model and film actress Capucine.

Incredibly, this famed car went missing for nearly a quarter century. When it was discovered in barn-find condition, it was bought by well-known Nevada collector Bob Lee. More recently, under its current ownership, this one-off model underwent a full, no-expense-spared professional restoration to its original Paris Salon state.

1931 Bentley 8 Litre

The Autocar once referred to the Bentley 8 Litre as 'motoring in its very highest form', and it remained the company’s fastest production vehicle until the R-Type Continental more than 20 years later.

This saloon with coachwork by Vanden Plas was bought new by AJ Player of the John Player family and motorsport sponsorship fame, and in later years found its way to the US where it has been in the ownership of a well-known enthusiast for the last half century.

It's still fitted with its original, lightweight, all-aluminum bodywork, and is the sole survivor of the three built in this style

1911 Mercedes 28/60 Tourer

Bonhams refer to the Mercedes as being 'truly epic in terms of history, proportions, performance and rarity', and it's hard to disagree. It has undergone a comprehensive and fully documented, historically accurate concours-level restoration.

More importantly, it has been in the same ownership for nearly 50 years, during which time it has been campaigned in numerous long-distance rallies, maintaining cruising speeds of more than 60mph.

The three cars will be offered at Bonhams’ 21st annual Monterey Car Week auction, on Friday, August 24 at the Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California, USA.
