Jay Kay's rare BMW E30 M3 Johnny Cecotto up for grabs
The Jamiroquai star has cherished this 1 of 505 BMW M3 Johnny Cecotto Limited Edition for over a decade, but now it could be yours.
The BMW M3 is an enduring icon that has forged its place in the automotive landscape. Today it’s a 454bhp super saloon with enough performance to obliterate sports cars while carrying the weekly shop.
While the M3 retains its thirst for performance, it began life as a homologation special for BMW to go racing. This rare 1989 BMW E30 M3 Johnny Cecotto Limited Edition heads to auction after a decade of ownership by Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay.

While its current celebrity owner is cause for excitement, this car’s reason for existence is even more interesting. To go touring car racing and rallying with the M3, BMW needed to produce a set number of road legal versions to comply with the rules. However, to gain added performance BMW also produced a series of limited edition M3s that had inherent advantages that could then be used in motorsport.
On the surface the Johnny Cecotto Limited Edition might appear as a means for BMW to cash-in on their driver’s recent championship win, but in reality it brought a series of changes destined for the racers.
Just 505 of these special M3s were built and featured more powerful 2.3-litre engines producing 215bhp. Thinner glass helped reduce weight while more aggressive Evo II front and rear spoilers created added stability at speed. Visually all examples were finished in Nogaro Silver and were given black alloy wheels for a truly sinister look.
The car was imported by Munich Legends in 1995 before Jay Kay bought the car 10 years ago. This rare M3 has since been stored in a temperature controlled garage and cherished by the famed musician. It comes with full documentation and has recently undergone a major service to ensure it is in prime working order.
If you fancy getting hold of this very sought after M3 Johnny Cecotto Limited Edition that also happens to be owned by Jay Kay, it will be at the Silverstone Auctions Classic NEC Motor Show sale on 10th - 11th November 2018. Its estimate is between £70,000 and £85,000.
