Beaulieu's Simply Smart car show returns for 2018

Smart has a bit of a marmite reputation – but if you love the little things, there's a modern classic show dedicated to the marque at Beaulieu this November

The eighth edition of Beaulieu's Smart car celebration 'Simply Smart' will take place on Remembrance Sunday this year, and include a line-up of the German manufacturer and its modern classic city car.

Besides the Smart Roadster, most of the cars produced by the Daimler-owned company since 1998 have been cheap, compact, colourful, making them perfect for tight parking spaces and the narrow confines of urban life. All varieties of the Smart car, from the original Fortwo to the latest Forfour will be present on the grounds of the National Motor Museum.

Speedy city cars on AutoClassics…

Although there are limited edition Smarts out there, what fans should be looking out for is the customisations, upgrades and elaborate paint schemes that owners have applied to their vehicles. Past examples have included a Gulf-liveried Fortwo, one made to resemble a 'Little Tikes' toy car used by early years school children across the world to run over their fellow pupils and lunch monitors, and a Roadster with the ground clearance of a monster truck.

Such flamboyancy often works well in the People's Choice Awards, where event goers and participants get to vote on their favourite Smart car of the show. Once the votes have been counted, the winner will receive the Beaulieu trophy and a prize courtesy of car care company Autoglym prize, then lead a parade of the most popular Smart cars through Beaulieu's grounds.

Beaulieu Events co-ordinator Dan Vaughan said: “Simply Smart is always a great social occasion, giving owners and enthusiasts the chance to catch up and talk about all things Smart. With so many custom paint finishes and eye-catching graphics to admire, the rally is an ideal opportunity for them to compare each others’ cars.”

On the same day as the Simply Smart is the Armistice centenary, which will be recognised with a two-minute silence at 11am, which visitors are invited to take part in. To participate in the Simply Smart event it costs £10 as an adult, or £5 for children aged 5-16 when tickets are bought in advance. On the day prices are £12 for an adult and £6 for a child. Included in the ticket price is access to all other attractions at Beaulieu, including the museum, the 13th century abbey, the permanent 'Top Gear' exhibition, Palace House and its surrounding grounds.

All other visitors can buy a general admission ticket to Beaulieu at £24.75 on the day for an adult, £23.75 for concessionary, £12.50 for children and for free for anyone younger than five years old.
