‘Rarity is always important when it comes to high-value classic cars,’ says Simon Langsdale, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions.
‘When you have a classic Aston Martin convertible that is one of only 166 made, it’s a special thing. Then when you add in the X-Pack upgrades, taking the rarity to one of only 78 ever built, you have a truly unmissable opportunity.’
What is an Aston Martin X-Pack?
The X-Pack remains one of the most sought-after Astons from the 1980s. Featuring a 432bhp 5.4-litre V8, and capable of pushing past 60mph from a standstill in six seconds and breaching the 160mph barrier, the Vantage model features various body upgrades over the standard car.
There’s an aggressive, bespoke bonnet alongside flared wheelarches, a boot spoiler and an extended front valance. The result is a muscular yet tasteful take on an already charismatic vehicle. Justifiably, it remains one of the fastest production convertibles in existence.
Built in right-hand-drive form back in October 1986, this car was used as the show vehicle throughout the 1986 Earls Court Motor Show – as showcased on the plaque situated on the centre console.
This X-Pack was first registered in 1987, and was retained by the factory for press duties before being sold on to the first of only three owners. The current vendor acquired the Aston 28 years ago, purchasing the rare beast from Reg Vardy of Houghton Le Spring in 1990 to add to his private collection.
The car has enjoyed a pampered life ever since. It was enrolled in a special service partnership with Car-Tech Prestige of Hartlepool – in which the company monitors valuable cars in storage, carrying out routine maintenance and refreshing the vehicle when necessary – and underwent a £9k respray in 2008.
Currently presented in Chichester Blue paint with a Magnolia interior and blue piping alongside burr walnut veneers, the Aston has also just received a new clutch. The odometer reads a minuscule 32,000 miles.
‘This is a very desirable classic and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of the most dramatically powerful, in-your-face pieces of automotive sculpture that Aston Martin could produce,’ concludes Simon.
