Aston Martin DBS Superleggera returns
Aston Martin has announced the return of its legendary DBS and Superleggera nameplate, its first appearance since 2012 and with a reported 700bhp on offer too
The replacement for Aston Martin’s front-engined V12 flagship model – the Vanquish – will feature a return of the legendary DBS badge. Dubbed the 'DBS Superleggera', it’s not only summons the nameplate’s first appearance in half a decade, but also signals a change in the terminology of Gaydon’s flagship model.
First coined for the iconic 1967 William Towns’ designed-model, the DBS title has remained a key part of the marque’s heritage. Intended as the successor to Aston's beloved DB6, the DBS landed with straight-six power.

In September 1969, the DBS was made available with a 5340cc V8 engine – known fittingly as the DBS V8. Produced alongside the DB6 for three years, the DBS was eventually phased out in favour of the Aston Martin V8. The final example left the factory in 1972.
The DBS model was then resurrected in 2007 for the range topping GT cars, penned by current chief creative officer Marek Reichman and best showcased by Daniel Craig in 007 adventures Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.
The new Superleggera will tackle the brand’s ambitions to replace each of its existing two-door sportscar models as part of its ‘Second Century Plan’.
Alongside the resurrection of the DBS model, Touring’s famous mark – Superleggera – will make a welcome return to Aston’s sleek bonnet lines. Originally a collaboration that helped pave the way to icons such as the DB4, DB5 and DB6 Mark 1, the lightweight construction technology of Touring will ensure the new DBS Superleggera features the highest levels of performance and design.
Reports state that the turbocharged 5.2-litre V12 engine used by the DB11 will provide a basis before being tuned to offer in excess of 700bhp.
Reichman said: ‘When you hear the name DBS Superleggera, you know what it is. It’s the definitive Aston Martin Super GT. It’s an icon, a statement and this one will be no different.
‘We’ve pushed the boundaries of performance and design to give this car a distinct character and ensure it’s worthy of the heritage and weight that this name carries’.
The Vanquish name isn’t set to disappear, saved for Aston’s forthcoming mid-engined supercar set to rival the Ferrari 488 GTB and McLaren 720S. The new Vanquish will commence production in 2021.
Further details on Aston Martin’s highly-anticipated super GT will be revealed in the second quarter of 2018.
