Aston Martin adds DB4 GT Zagato to continuation range
Aston Martin add the iconic DB4 GT Zagato to its continuation program with 19 examples to be built. Each reborn example is to be paired with an all-new Zagato model.
Aston Martin and the Italian coachbuilder Zagato is a winning combination that has yielded many iconic cars. Arguably the pair’s most evocative and valuable creation was the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato of the 1960s. Today Aston Martin revealed that this iconic car will join its latest batch of reborn continuation models, and come paired with an all-new Zagato design too.

Aston Martin and Zagato will create 19 continuation models of the DB4 GT Zagato that will join other recreation cars such as the DB4 GT and iconic Goldfinger DB5. The new-old car will be near identical to the originals, utilising some manufacturing techniques used in the 60s, but also feature modern performance and engineering enhancements.
Every DB4 will come with a new Zagato model based on the latest DBS Superleggera — complete with a 715bhp twin-turbo V12 engine. Each pair costs £6 million before tax with the DB4 Zagato and DBS Zagato being delivered to their new homes in late 2019 and 2020 respectively.
Between 1960 and 1963 just 19 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagatos were built as a more aerodynamic and lightweight variant of the DB4 GT. The Italian styling formed a beautifully curvaceous body that cocooned a 340bhp straight-six engine. This engine was modified throughout its career, but the recreations will be significantly more powerful with 380bhp.
The Zagato was designed to go racing and take on Ferrari’s 250 GT, initially in the hands of racing legend Sir Sterling Moss. Sadly, the DB4 GT Zagato wasn’t a sales, success with the original planned run of 25 cars being scaled down to just 19. Today these original cars are worth a fortune, one example selling for £10.1 million at Goodwood earlier this year.
Paul Spires, Managing Director at Aston Martin Works, said: 'It has been my pleasure and privilege to oversee many exceptional projects here at Aston Martin Works, but creating nineteen DB4 GT Zagato continuations as one half of the DBZ Centenary Collection is a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.'
'We will bring all our hand-craftsmanship and expertise to bear in building these nineteen continuation cars, sympathetically incorporating the very latest engineering advancements and performance enhancements, but remaining true to the purity and authenticity of the original design'.
Aston Martin’s continuation cars have split opinion amongst enthusiasts, but can more Zagato penned automotive artwork in the world really be a bad thing? We don’t think so.
