By the time the 1920s rolled in, the Silver Ghost was suffering in the sales department. Despite improvements in overall refinement and outright performance, competition was catching up. New models appeared fresh and different, whereas the Rolls-Royce badge was somewhat stagnant out with the world of old money.
Previously held superiority had been eroded by 1921, but popularity with the right clientele still reigned supreme. Such as this example showcases.
This right-hand drive 1921 Rolls-Royce is one of just two built in the American Springfield factory to have been equipped with artillery wooden wheels. We can hear the sarcastic mutterings from here, but in the fastidious world of Rolls-Royce motorcars, such an attribute is one to observe. But then, with sales in decline, any order with a paying customer was adhered to.
Ordered new by Mr. Tom Batchelor, the Silver Ghost remains wonderfully original with an undamaged Willoughby-bodied Pickwick Town Car frame and relatively unused 7.4-litre straight six powerplant; having covered less than 26,000 miles (41,000 km) in its 97-year history.
The reason? The pre-car British luxury icon has spent the best part of 45 years in an American museum. As such, the Rolls-Royce has covered just over 5000 miles (8000km) since 1989.
Estimated to sell for between £125,000 – £150,000 ($160,000 –$191,000), could this 1921 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost be the ultimate Christmas present for those who have everything? It certainly presents an ideal ‘Ghost story’.
