Coachbuilding is enjoying something of a modern-day renascence with various manufacturers offering bespoke programs to wealthy customers. However, having a car custom built never used to be all that special, in fact, it was commonplace. The result was that a particular model could have many unique body styles thanks to these talented design houses. One such coachbuilt car is this 1948 Alfa Romeo 6C2500SS by Touring Superleggera that has just won the Zoute Concours d’Elegance.

Based on the prestigious Alfa Romeo 6C chassis, this beautiful coupe took ‘Best in show’ in Belgium. Being a later 6C, the coachwork incorporates more modern design work than 6Cs before it. The front wings and headlights are integrated to the body that takes a much more sculptural form. Alfa’s distinctive grille takes pride of place while subtle chrome work details this Italian classic. The car has been manicured back to ‘as new’ condition and even wears an authentic shade of paint.
The Alfa Romeo was up against some tough competition at the concours with strong challenges from an array of vintage Porsche’s celebrating the brand’s 70th year. Other noteworthy attendees included a series of 1980’s Formula One cars, a flock of BMW M1, beautiful Jaguar E-Types, and a Toyota 2000GT. A couple of other Touring Superleggera efforts also took home prizes such as the Bentley Continental Flying Star III for ‘Most Elegant Interior’ and a Lamborghini 4000GT Flying Star II in the Shooting Brake class.
Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, to give the company its full name, was established in Milan during 1925. It became famous for its beautiful designs and lightweight construction methods. Iconic cars penned by this Italian design house include the Aston Martin DB5, Alfa Romeo 8C, and Ferrari 340 MM Spider.
The Alfa Romeo 6C2500SS proved to be a worth winner at this highly competitive concours.
