Adolf Hitler’s armoured 1939 Mercedes to be auctioned
The ‘Super Mercedes’ personally ordered by Adolf Hitler is to be offered for sale in Arizona during Scottsdale auctions week on January 17
A Mercedes-Benz 770K Grosser, which quickly became infamous as the ‘Super Mercedes’, used by Adolf Hitler to entertain dignitary and guests, will go under the hammer at an auction house in the US – eight decades after the tyrant personally ordered the 7.7-litre cabriolet.
Crafted with armour-plated side panels and bulletproof glass, the Mercedes debuted on October 6, 1939 as part of a large motorcade which delivered the German leader to the old Reich Chancellery in front of vast crowds. Paraded during victory celebrations, the 770K Grosser trumpeted the conquering of France, Yugoslavia and Greece before being seized by the US Army in 1945.
The Mercedes was then passed between casino tycoons, wealthy historians and tobacco magnates, changing hands for huge sums of money and being transported across the globe, before heading for the Worldwide Auctioneers sale in Arizona, taking place on January 17.
It was sold by US Army officials in 1949 to Tom N Austin, of the Austin tobacco dynasty in Greeneville, who eventually donated the 770K to his local regiment of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW 1990). The car as used for several years in parades and for carrying VIPs amid Gold Star Mothers who suffered the loss of their children on active duty.
Hitler’s Mercedes-Benz fell into a state of disrepair and was stored in a nearby garage until 1976, when it was discovered and purchased by Steve Munson and Joe Ogden. Cosmetically restored and retaining the original black leather upholstery, the odometer displayed 33,309 kilometres at the time. In the 42 years since, the Benz has travelled just 50km.
After the renovation work was carried out, the infamous vehicle was showcased across the country before the next owners, Earl and Tom Blakely, registered the Benz in Georgia. It was rumoured that the asking price had been in excess of $1 Million.
In 1983, the 770K was sold to the owner of the Imperial Palace Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas, an addition to the famed on-site Imperial Palace Auto Collection. The Mercedes was then sold as part of a 21-vehicle package of significant Benz cars- a remarkable valuation that still holds firm today.
Claimed to be the most historically significant vehicle ever offered for sale, you can find further information on the Worldwide Auctioneers lot listing.
Of the final sale price of the vehicle, 10% of the total amount will be donated for use on education into why, and how, the Holocaust was allowed to happen, with research into effectively preventing such atrocities in the future.
