Ferrari or Ford? Something for everyone at Auburn Fall sale
1971 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider Conversion vs Pope Saint John Paul II’s 1976 Escort; all budgets and tastes will be catered for at RM’s autumn auction
Talk about a crazy combination! Whether you’re a fan of high-end Ferraris or workaday Fords, there’ll be something for everyone at RM Auctions’ next Auburn Fall sale. Want proof? What about this 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider Conversion, which sits neatly alongside a 1976 Ford Escort formerly owned by Pope Saint John Paul II and being sold to benefit charity.
These diverse automobiles are just two attractions at the huge event, which will see more than 800 collector cars and a huge amount of automobilia go under the hammer, as well as host a swap meet, car corral and family-based automotive activities.

The left-hand-drive, European-spec 365 GTB/4 Daytona, chassis no. 13729, was originally delivered to a Ferrari dealer in Bologna, Italy, finished in Argento Metallizzato paint with blue leather interior trim. It was subsequently exported to California, where, in 1981, it was transformed from Berlinetta to Spider – a popular conversion in period – by specialist Michael Sheehan’s European Auto Restoration.
The car is presented by the current owner with Rosso Corsa paint, black and red leather, and chrome knock-off Borrani wire rims, and is expected to raise $500,000-$600,000.
Less exotic but equally interesting is the 1976 Ford Escort 1100 GL – the final car driven by Pope Saint John Paul II before his election to the Papacy in 1978. After two decades in storage, ‘the world’s most famous Ford Escort’ is in remarkably original condition and is estimated at $150,000-$300,000.
It’s offered without reserve, and all proceeds of its sale will go to the John M O’Quinn Foundation, which supports charitable activities in the Houston, Texas locale, focusing on conservation, education, health and programmes benefitting underprivileged youth.
RM Sotheby’s global head of auctions, Gord Duff, said: The Auburn Fall atmosphere is unlike that of any other event on our global calendar, and our early highlights are a testament to the variety you’ll find only at the Auburn Auction Park. The Daytona Spider Conversion offers a more affordable acquisition of one of Ferrari’s most sought-after models, while the Papal Ford Escort represents a rare collecting opportunity and the ultimate conversation piece.’
The 48th annual RM Auctions Auburn Fall sale takes place on August 31–September 2, 2018, as part of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival. See here for more information.
