Classics for sale: Porsche 356 B - an ideal period race and road machine

This Porsche 356 B Coupe is full of character and olde worlde charm, has just been restored to a high quality and is ideal for racing, rallies and the road

This 1960 Porsche 356 B Super 90 Coupe must tick virtually all of the boxes for a retro-minded racing and car enthusiast. For many the Porsche Type 356 is the ultimate sports car – and the 356 B represents the mid-point of its long-term development. This one is filled with character and is close to archetypal in period racing sophistication. It is ideal for race and street driving and furthermore has just undergone a full restoration.

And it could be yours as it is being offered without reserve as part of RM Sotheby’s Porsche 70th anniversary auction, which takes place in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday October 27. It is estimated to sell for between $140,000 and $160,000 (£107,557 to £122,922).

More on the Porsche 356…

Its restoration is fully documented and of a high-quality and the car’s current owner has driven it only 500 miles since, reporting that the car is properly sorted and ready to go on track and on the road! It’s eligible and ideally suited for many club events, rallies, for vintage racing as well as spirited driving on the roads.

This car’s previous racing experience is extensive too, having been prepared and raced over many years by vintage racing stalwart and enthusiast German Botero. The car also has the rare status of having participated in the modern La Carrera Panamericana long-distance rally.

Botero passed it on to collector Juan Hinestrosa in 2013 who commissioned Porsche specialists P4 Motorsports and Champion Motorsport in Florida to perform a full restoration. This included stripping the car down to bare metal with all body work leaded. Every nut and bolt was carefully restored with no expense spared, and took two years to complete. The original 1600 Super 90 engine has been completely rebuilt to original specification, and with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

It is finished in its distinctive original colour scheme of ivory with red leather interior, and its beauty on the outside is matched on the inside, with a roll bar, red racing stripe, leather hood and trunk straps, nerf bars, wood steering wheel, racing harness, and more.

Over its 15-year production run the elegant and reliable 356 evolved from a streamlined aluminium-bodied coupe powered by a VW-derived, 46bhp, 1100cc air-cooled flat-four, with various subsequent models adding more power.

In what is known as “T5” form, the B introduced new front and rear sheet-metal, while retaining the curved front trunk lid and rounded fenders of the A series. The headlamps were raised, a larger hood handle added, and front vent windows appeared in the doors. Mechanically, the gearbox and drum brakes were upgraded. A new steering wheel and column refreshed the interior, along with redesigned rear seats.
