2019 Monterey Motorsports Reunion to host three IMSA races
IMSA will mark its 50th anniversary in 2019 and will be honoured at next year's Monterey Motorsports Reunion with IMSA cars making up three of the 14 race categories
The Monterey Motorsports Reunion is an event circled in every enthusiasts calendar in big red permanent marker. It represents not only one of the few times you might see some legendary machines, but an even rarified day when you seen them racing as if back in their heyday.
The 2018 instalment was fantastic viewing but, as we approach the new year, attention has already turned to what comes next. For 2019, IMSA cars will headline the event to celebrate 50 years since the creation of the series.

Usually just one manufacturer is honoured as the annual theme, with Porsche the star this year with its 70th anniversary. However, the 50th anniversary of IMSA title chosen encompasses racers throughout those five decades
In order to make this unique circumstance work with the 14 categories of cars attending event, hosted at the iconic Laguna Seca circuit, three of them will be dedicated to IMSA cars: 1973-1981 FIA, IMSA, GT, GTX, AAGT, 1981-1991 IMSA GTO/GTU, and IMSA Prototypes. Each of the 14 groups are carefully selected, so to have three for IMSA is quite the honour.
'IMSA’s long history at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca has spanned over five decades and we are flattered to be among the premier brands that have shared this honour over the years,' said IMSA President Scott Atherton.
'I can assure you the whole of IMSA – teams, drivers, sponsors and staff are looking forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary with an unprecedented gathering next year of cars and stars from IMSA’s past and present.'
Officials also announced the other 11 categories of cars for the 2019 Monterey Motorsports Reunion, with plenty of other classic racing cars of the past to look forward to:
- Pre-1940 Sports Racing, Touring and Race cars, and 1927-1951 Racing Cars
- 1955-1961 Sports Racing (under/over 2000cc)
- 1966-1972 Trans-Am
- 1961-1966 GT under 2500cc
- 1963-1966 GT Over 2500cc
- 1967-1981 Formula Ford
- IMSA Prototypes – GTP, WSC, LMP, DP
- 1947-1955 Sports Racing and GT cars
- 1955-1964 GT
- Two-litre Sports Racers thru 1984
- 1973-1981 FIA, IMSA, GT, GTX, AAGT
- 1967-1984 Formula One
- 1981-1991 IMSA GTO/GTU
- 1990-2011 Endurance Legends
The Monterey Motorsports Reunion is a fantastic four day spectacle where some of the most historic racers and a fair few famed drivers take on the infamous Corkscrew. Registration for cars and wishing to attend are now open, but demand is once again expected to outstrip supply. The event will take place as part of the famous Monterey Car Week in Southern California on August 15-18, 2019.
